  • Smart NOS Improves SHAANXI BC & TV NETWORK

Background

Shaanxi Broadcast & TV Network Intermediary (Group) Co., Ltd. (SXBC) is the first provincial broadcast and TV network company to achieve unified planning, construction, management, and operation. SXBC’s backbone network provides various services such as broadband, private lines, and interactive TV for users throughout the entire province. It is one of the core networks offered by the company.

Challenges

The backbone network of SXBC makes use of a flattened structure design. With continuous network construction and capacity expansion, the stability and robustness of the network are decreasing. The main problems are as follows:

1. The backbone routers have too many routing entries and redundancy configurations. When a fault occurs on the network, the fault can be automatically rectified in a short time, but the root cause cannot be identified.

2. IP addresses and network segments conflict on the network.

3. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), policy-based routing, and routing rules need to be optimized. The overall network performance needs to be optimized urgently.

The backbone network of SXBC requires a set of network solutions to evaluate and improve its capabilities and efficiency, thereby guaranteeing high quality and standards of the services carried by the network.

Solution

The Huawei Smart Network Operation Service (NOS) is a proactive Operations and Maintenance (O&M) and high-end consulting network service. It manages network availability, versions, changes, configurations, and faults in a proactive, regular, and customized manner. This helps to eliminate network problems before they occur, and standardizes network O&M.

To reduce network security risks and improve O&M efficiency of the backbone network, comprehensive evaluation and analysis are performed on the architecture, protocols, configurations, security, and performance of more than 40 routers and 300 core switches on the backbone network. This is achieved by the joint efforts of SXBC and Huawei using the Huawei Smart NOS network evaluation service to eliminate network security risks, reduce network risks, and improve network performance.

To eliminate the performance bottlenecks and security risks in the construction and O&M, Huawei Smart NOS network evaluation service matches the requirements of SXBC backbone network to customize the following services:

Information collection: Deploy the information collection tool on the live network to collect live-network information and customize the baseline based on best practices and live network conditions.

Preliminary evaluation: Import the collected live-network data to the automatic analysis system, perform automatic analysis, and then evaluation based on the baseline. After that, Huawei network experts preliminarily screen the results and generate preliminary evaluation reports.

Expert review: Huawei sets up a Joint Review Team (JRT) to review and analyze generated preliminary evaluation report. They also identify and confirm issues and risks to output the list of the issues and risks with the root cause found. Finally, the team outputs the final evaluation report and optimization report.

Tracking process: Communicate with the customer about the final evaluation results in a thorough manner, discuss, and develop an improvement plan.

Benefits

1. Guaranteed efficient running of services

Huawei’s Smart NOS network evaluation service helps SXBC promptly discover potential “pipe” risks of services, improve network reliability and scalability, standardize network data, improve the running efficiency of the entire network, and mine existing resources to reduce network maintenance costs.

2. Reduced network O&M costs

Optimize services to improve O&M efficiency and Return On Investment (ROI).

High performance: The network performance can be improved significantly through the evaluation and optimization of the network architecture, capacity, and performance.

High efficiency: With Huawei’s best practices in the global industry, the network usage efficiency can be significantly improved through service optimization.

High skills: The network O&M capabilities can be improved by analyzing network running trends, summarizing network fault experiences, and sharing industry O&M experiences.

Low costs: Unified management of hardware, software, and configurations enables standard network operations and greatly reduces maintenance costs.
