Issue Description
What is the hot spare disk in a storage system used for?

Solution
The hot spare disk is used to replace a faulty member disk in a RAID group and save the data on the faulty disk. To ensure the reliability of the storage system, it is recommend to set host spare disks after creating RAID group.

When configuring hot spare disks, observe the following configuration principles:
  • Hot spare disks cannot be coffer disks.
  • The number of hot spare disks should not be less than the sum of controller enclosure and disk enclosures.
  • The capacity of the hot spare disk must not be less than the capacity of the member disk with the smallest capacity.
NOTE:
If disks of different types are intermixed in a disk enclosure, configure at least one hot spare disk for each disk type.

After a hot spare disk is removed and then reinserted, the storage system cannot automatically set it as a hot spare disk. You need to log in to the ISM or the CLI to manually set the newly-inserted disk as a hot spare disk for the storage system.
