The BGP Neighbor Relationship Between the NE5000E and Devices of Other Manufacturers Is Unstable due to Inconsistent Parameters

Publication Date:  2012-07-27 Views:  117 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Devices of the manufacturer C    Devices of the manufacturer J
     |  (EBGP)     | (EBGP)
           \                  /
              NE5000E
The NE5000E establishes EBGP neighbor relationships with devices of different manufacturers. The BGP neighbor relationship between the NE5000E and the device of the manufacturer C is re-established after an interval.

Alarm Information
Null

Handling Process
1. Check the routes between devices and find that the routes are normal.
2. The BGP neighbor relationship between the NE5000E and the device of the manufacturer C is re-established, while the BGP neighbor relationship between the NE5000E and the device of the manufacturer J is not.
3. Check detailed BGP parameters.
If parameters of the NE5000E remain unchanged,
Hold Time: 90 sec    Keepalive Time: 30 sec
The parameters of the NE5000E are the same as that of the device of the manufacturer J. The parameters of the device of the manufacturer C, however, are different. The parameters of the device of the manufacturer C are as follows: Hold Time: 180sec    Keepalive Time: 90 sec
As a result, the problem occurs because the two parameters are inconsistent; or, the negotiation of parameters fails.
4. Manually change the Holdtime and Keepalive time of the BGP neighbors of the NE5000E to accord with those of the device of the manufacturer C. Then, the problem is solved.
Root Cause
1. The routes used to establish the neighbor relationship is unstable.
2. The BGP neighbor relationship can be established. The re-establishment of the BGP neighbor relationship may be caused by inconsistent parameters or wrongly negotiated parameters.

Suggestions
When establishing the BGP relationship between the NE5000E and devices of other manufacturers, you should keep the Holdtime and Keepalive time of both ends consistent.
