Restrictions on IP Address Setting of the NG WDM 6800

Publication Date:  2012-07-25 Views:  59 Downloads:  3
Issue Description
During the deployment of the OSN 6800, the customer plans the IP address 192.168.5.134 for the OSN 6800. The customer, however, fails to set the IP address by using the Web LCT. A message is displayed, indicating that the set IP address is invalid. The error code is 38980.
In this case, the customer checks whether there are restrictions on the IP address setting of the OSN 6800. The customer checks the R3 product manuals but does not find related descriptions.
After testing various IP addresses, the customer finds that the following IP address domains are invalid:
192.168.0.x to 192.168.7.x
192.169.0.x
192.170.0.x

Alarm Information
The customer fails to set the IP address by using the Web LCT. A message is displayed, indicating that the set IP address is invalid. The error code is 38980.
Handling Process
Setting the IP address on the Navigator also fails. Therefore, it is determined that this problem is caused by the product limits. Consult the R&D. It is found that certain IP addresses are reserved for internal communications. The specific IP address restrictions are as follows:
1. If the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, the following IP address domains cannot be used:
192.168.0.x to 192.168.7.x
192.169.0.x to 192.169.7.x
192.170.0.x to 192.170.7.x
2. If the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0, the following IP address domains cannot be used:
192.168.x.y
192.169.x.y
192.170.x.y
3. If the subnet mask is 255.0.0.0, the following IP address domain cannot be used:
192.x.y.z

Root Cause
As the error is reported by the Web LCT, the possibility that the T2000 is faulty is excluded.
The error code is 38980 (below 65536), so the fault is caused by product restrictions.
Setting the IP address on the Navigator also fails. Therefore, it is determined that this problem is caused by the product limits.

Suggestions
Certain IP address domains may be reserved for internal communications. This, however, should be indicated in the design documents for the customers’ reference. Otherwise, if the IP address domain allocated to the WDM 6800 during DCN network planning conflicts with the IP address domain reserved for internal communications, setting IP addresses may fail on site. In that case, the customer has to take more time and effort to reset IP addresses.
