Starting the Node Pass-Through Protocol Fails When Configuring ODUk SPRing Protection with the Prompt Indicating Absence of the Span ID

Publication Date:  2012-07-25 Views:  53 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Configure the ODUk SPRing protection on the OptiX OSN 6800:
1. Create a protection group for the NEs where services are added or dropped; configure cross-connections for the add/drop services and configure the span ID. The protocol starts properly.
2. Create a protection group for the pass-through node and configure pass-through cross-connection for the working channel. The protocol fails to start with a prompt indicating that the span ID is absent. Also, the span ID fails to be configured, as indicated that the pass-through cross-connection exists.
3. Create a protection group for the pass-through node. Then, configure the span ID but the configuration fails, with a prompt indicating that the cross-connection does not exist.

Alarm Information
Span ID absent
Handling Process
Use any of the following methods to configure a pass-through node:
1. Directly configure the cross-connection between the working and protection channels of the NE instead of configuring a protection group. With this configuration applied globally, the protection subnet cannot be found.
2. Create a protection group for the pass-through node. Configure pass-through cross-connection for the working channel only and do not start the protocol. With this configuration applied globally, the protection subnet can be found.

Root Cause
The pass-through node does not require starting the protocol.
Suggestions
1. You need to start the protocol after creating a protection group for the node where services are added or dropped. You do not need to start the protocol for the pass-through node. It is recommended that the NMS provides a prompt indicating that the protocol should not be started rather than a prompt indicating that the span ID is absent, when the user tries to start the protocol for a pass-through node.
2. Method 2 is recommended.
