The inconsistent network interface rate of host and storage results in errors and slow visiting rate in server.

Publication Date:  2012-09-18 Views:  34 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Field network: storage of iSCSI host interface is connected with host through switch.
Network interface rate of host is set 100M/s, with half-duplex, while that of the switch is set 100M/s, and host interface of the storage is set automatic negotiation.
When the host visits the storage, the visiting rate is slow and there occurs errors in server. After analyzing the storage log, it is found there were so many prints of ping of host that is not reachable.

Handling Process
With different working modes in the two network interfaces(one is fixed mode and the other is automatic negotiation), although they can negotiate successfully, one port of automatic negotiation can only work with mode of half-duplex. In this situation, ping is reachable, and it can work well when traffic is not busy. But when the traffic raised into above 15%, there occurs collision and packet error. It occurs so much bit error when one of the network interface works in fixed mode and the other one in automatic negotiation.
Handing Process
Set the network interfaces rate of host, switch and storage 100M/s, full-duplex.
Run the following commands in Linux host to check the network interface rate of host:
#ethtool eth0
Run the following commands in Linux host to modify the network interface rate of host:
#ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off speed 100 duplex full
Modify the network interface rate of host in windows:
1. click right the “Local link” to enter the “Property” of the network adapter.
2. Select “Advanced” in “Configure”.
3. Select “speed & duplex” in “Property”, modify the “Value” into “Auto”.
