SUSE10 log file is too big, which leads the network service unavailable.(such as telnet, ftp and so on)

Publication Date:  2012-09-20 Views:  103 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
One day we found that the network service such as ftp and telnet became unavailable.
Logging into tast2, we found the network service was set as “disable”. Reactivate the network service, and telnet function become normal. But about 1 minute later, it has problem again.
Alarm Information
Null
Handling Process
Backup and Delete this log file, then reboot service. The network service such as ftp and telnet returns to normal.
1.mv xinetd.log xinetd.logbak  //Backup
2.rcxinetd restart    //Reboot network service
3. Test the function ftp and telnet to insure network service available.
Root Cause
By checking OS log, we can find the alarm message as follow:
Aug 23 13:00:24 linux xinetd[18887]: Unexpected signal 25
(File size limit exceeded)
Aug 23 13:00:24 linux vsftpd: Sun Aug 23 13:00:24 2009 [pid
18902] CONNECT: Client "10.100.5.124"
Aug 23 13:00:24 linux xinetd[18887]: Unexpected signal 25
(File size limit exceeded)
Aug 23 13:00:24 linux xinetd[18887]: Unexpected signal 25
(File size limit exceeded)
Aug 23 13:00:24 linux vsftpd: Sun Aug 23 13:00:24 2009 [pid
18904] CONNECT: Client "10.100.5.125"
Aug 23 13:00:24 linux xinetd[18887]: Unexpected signal 25
(File size limit exceeded)

By the description of log, we guess some ultra-large files lead the network service unavailable. Check it by following command:
1.Execute command “rcxinetd status”. The result shows “unuse”, so service is not started.
2.Execute command “rcxinetd start” manually. 5 seconds later, service condition changes from “running” to “unuse”.
3.Check /var/log/messages file. The service detail record overstocking time has error as follow:
Aug 23 13:00:24 linux xinetd[18887]: Unexpected signal 25
(File size limit exceeded)
4.By checking OS files, we find the /var/log/xinetd.log file related with network service is about as big as 2.2G.
5. Consulting SUSE engineer and they say that when xinetd.log is bigger than 2G, this phenomenon could occur. So finding the causes.
Suggestions
In SUSE OS, when xinetd.log file is bigger than 2G, the network service maybe available, especially as FTP server. So we must pay more attention to xinetd.log file.
