Hard disk intermittent disconnection cause high CPU possession rate and slow host performance

Publication Date:  2012-10-17 Views:  78 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Speed of host side read or writes lun is very slow, there is alarm in USM that CPU possession rate exceed configured threshold. Firmware of array initiator chip is 1.24 (this edition is mainstream edition at that time)
Alarm Information
alarm that CPU possession rate exceed configured threshold. Handling Process
1. Upgrade array initiator chip Firmware to 1.29 (only upgrade of initiator chip is OK, do not need to upgrade other component).
Root Cause
1. A disk in array RAID group keep intermittent disconnection, cause array side IO severe blocking and host bad performance.
2. Root cause of intermittent disconnection is cooperation problem between west digital hard disk and array initiator chip Firmware. Firmware of array initiator chip is 1.24 (this edition is mainstream edition at that time).  When array work with west digital hard disk, hard disk would return with 2.5 seconds delay when read bad sector, initiator chip of 1.24 edition Firmware initiate Link Reset when there is a 2 seconds delay, which cause link intermittent disconnection. When encounter bad sector, retry after read failure, which cause constant intermittent disconnection.
3. 1.29 edition initiator Firmware change Link Reset initiator time from 2 seconds to 5 seconds, so the problem above do not exists.
4. This problem only exist when west digital SATA hard disk cooperate with S2300, and do not exist on array with Seagate SATA disk or other brand SAS disks.
