The Emulex LPe12002 hasn’t complied with the FC protocol, so the server and storage can’t connect sometimes

The operating system of the application server: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP3 for X86_64
The HBA card: Emulex LPe12002
The storage device and the application server take the DAS networking, as the figure 1 displayed:

When the application server and the storage device take the DAS networking and use the “point to point” mode, there will appear the following phenomena in a certain probability: we find the run indicator of the FC host port is off on site, and on the ISM, we can find the “run status” of the FC host port is “offline”, as the figure 2 displayed:

In the ISM menu bar, choose the “event > event management”, we can see the fault Alarm information
In the ISM menu bar, choose the “event > event management”, we can see the fault information about the FC host port’s link down, as the figure 3 displayed:

Handling Process
Set the “configuration mode” of the FC host port as “arbitrated loop”.
1. Login in the ISM, unfold the storage node which needed to be operated and select “device information > port” in the navigation tree.
2. Select the FC host port which is needed to be revised and right-click the FC host port.
3. Select the “modification” in the ejecting shortcut menu.
4. At the ejected dialog box “modify the FC port information”, set the “configuration mode” of the FC host port as “arbitrated loop”.
Root Cause
The chip supplier’s PMC analysis is displayed as the figure 4

From the PMC’s analysis, we find the Emulex12002 hasn’t deployed according to the protocol, our chip supplier can’t resign the chip, so this problem can’t be avoid on the storage device. When the FC host port mode is configured as “point to point”, as the Emulex12002 hasn’t complied with the protocol, it causes the storage device and the application server can’t create connection in a certain probability.
Suggestions
When the application server connecting the storage device via the Emulex12002 HBA card, please set the mode of the Emulex12002 HBA card as “Loop preferred, then p2p”, and set the “configuration mode” of the FC host port as “arbitrated loop”.
