Starting the FTP Service Fails

Publication Date:  2013-07-23 Views:  56 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Product name and version: N8500 V100R002C00SPC306 (integrated with UAP)
Run ftp server start. It is found that the status of the FTP service is FAULTED.
Alarm Information
None
Handling Process
Uninstall the program and restart the N8500. Check the status of port 21. It is found that port 21 has been bonded by pure-ftpd.
N8000_01:~ # lsof -i :21
COMMAND   PID USER   FD   TYPE    DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
pure-ftpd 3737 root    4u  IPv4 109749629       TCP *:ftp (LISTEN)
Root Cause
When the FTP service is started, port 21 is bonded. Run the following command to check the usage of port 21:
N8000_01:~ # lsof -i :21
COMMAND   PID USER   FD   TYPE    DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
xinetd  24885 root    5u  IPv4 109731709       TCP *:ftp (LISTEN)

As shown in the preceding output, port 21 is used by the xinetd process rather than the pure-ftpd process that is running at the underlying layer of the FTP service. This prevents the FTP service from bonding port 21 and causes the FTP service unable to go online. Check the /etc/xinetd.d directory. It is found that the directory has file vsftpd. This indicates that the vsftpd program (a well-known FTP program that is not preinstalled on the N8500) has been installed and is occupying port 21.
Confirm with the onsite personnel that the vsftpd program is manually installed by them during the site deployment.
