The System Constantly Restarts During RH2285 OS Installation

Publication Date:  2015-06-25 Views:  139 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Hardware configuration:
RH2285 server

Software configuration:
SUSE 10 SP2

Symptom:

During operating system (OS) installation, when you copy files, the system automatically restarts. After multiple operations, the problem persists. Event logs queried on the baseboard management controller (BMC) Web UI are shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1 Event logs

Handling Process
Restore the basic input/output system (BIOS), and set BMC WDT Action For OS Loader to Disabled.

The directory is Advanced > IPMI2.0 Configuration, as shown in Figure 3 and Figure 4.

Figure 4 BMC WDT Action For OS Loader

Root Cause
Based on the BMC event logs, the system is restarted automatically when the watchdog overflows every 20 minutes.

The BMC watchdog automatically restarts the OS after checking that the OS fails to start during OS loading. See Figure 2.

Figure 2 Watchdog settings

By default, the BMC watchdog timer (WDT) is disabled. The WDT is enabled when the WDT driver is at the upper layer of the OS. During OS installation, the WDT does not take effect, and the installation duration exceeds 20 minutes. Therefore, the BMC WDT forcibly restarts the system when the OS is being installed.

The BMC WDT takes effect and forcibly restarts the system during OS installation.
Suggestions
Do not set the BIOS or BMC. For similar problems, check the software configuration, and then the hardware.
