A Blank Screen Is Displayed When Windows 2003 Is Installed on the XH310

Publication Date:  2015-06-25 Views:  89 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Hardware configuration:
A X6000 (XH310 server node with one hard disk and no RAID controller card)

Software configuration:
Windows 2003 SP2 64-bit

Symptom:

The ServiceCD is used to install Windows 2003 on the XH310, and a blank screen is displayed during installation, as shown in Figure 1.

Handling Process
1.  Solve this problem by referring to blank screen handling steps at the Microsoft support website: http://support.microsoft.com. Use the blank screen exception code 0x0000007B to locate the fault. The cause may be the virus, driver, or hardware.

2.  The XH310 is configured with one hard disk and no redundant array of independent disks (RAID) controller card. Therefore no RAID controller card driver is required. The hard disk interface protocol must be set to integrated drive electronics (IDE) for installing Windows 2003. By default, the hard disk interface protocol is Serial ATA Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) in the basic input/output system (BIOS) of the XH310. The blank screen is displayed during Windows 2003 installation by using the ServiceCD.

Therefore, there is a high probability that the cause is the hard disk interface protocol set in the BIOS. To check the hard disk interface protocol in the BIOS, choose Advanced > IDE Configuration. If the hard disk interface protocol is AHCI, set it to IDE and press Enter, as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2 Setting the hard disk interface protocol to IDE

3.  Install Windows 2003 by using the ServiceCD again. No blank screen is displayed. The problem is solved.

4.  If the problem persists, locate faults in other components.
Root Cause
Windows 2003 does not provide the AHCI driver. The hard disk interface protocol must be IDE in the BIOS.

Solution
Change the hard disk interface protocol to IDE in the BIOS.

Suggestions
During Windows 2003 startup, a blank screen is displayed. The cause may be that the hard disk interface protocol is set to AHCI in the BIOS. If the ServiceCD is not used for installing Windows 2003 on the XH310, and the hard disk interface protocol is set to AHCI, a message is displayed, indicating that no hard disk is detected.

Note:
AHCI and IDE are described as follows:
  1. IDE uses the 16-bit data parallel transmission and provides good compatibility.
  2. AHCI allows the storage driver program to enable the advanced Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) function and the functions including Native Command Queuing (NCQ). This technology increases channel locating efficiency and prolongs the hard disk service life.
  3. AHCI is used to improve performance by about 20%, and IDE is used to ensure operating system (OS) compatibility.
