An RH2285 Incorrectly Detects and Identifies External NICs

Publication Date:  2015-06-25 Views:  94 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Hardware configuration:
RH2285 server and 82571EB NIC

Symptom:

82571EB network interface cards (NICs) cannot be used in the OS. You can use the lspci command to check and identify NICs; however the NIC information is different from that of normal NICs.

Common NIC information is as follows:

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 06)

03:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 06)

Abnormal NIC information is as follows:

02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 05)

02:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 05)

The error information obtained from the site is as shown in Figure 1:

Figure 1 Abnormal NIC information

Handling Process
1.  After powering off the RH2285, remove and reinstall NICs. Then power on the server, and check that the NICs are normal.

2.  After checking that NICs are normal, remove the NICs during startup, and run the lspci command to query the NIC status:
  • 03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev ff)
  • 03:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev ff)
3.  Run the ifconfig command to check that media access control (MAC) addresses for NICs are correct.

4.  Run the ethtool eth2 and ethtool eth3 commands to query the link status. The displayed state is no.
Root Cause
Based on the preceding analysis, the cause is that the NICs are not detected.

Figure 2 shows the NIC slot position.

During server transportation or installation, the server vibrates, and individual Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) NICs are not properly installed.
Solution
  1. Power off the RH2285, and reinstall NICs properly.
  2. Check NICs based on the checklist during deployment.
Suggestions
  1. During deployment, external PCI NICs fail to be detected. You need to check whether hardware is installed properly in power-off state.
  2. Perform preventive maintenance inspection (PMI) regularly on devices.
  3. Perform maintenance training for maintenance personnel.
Note:
The release is collected to the SingleCloud maintenance documentations.
