How to change RAID hot spare for LSI SAS3108 from OS level

Issue Description

If you need to change the RAID card configuration without rebooting the server, you will need to use the MegaRAID Storcli tool for changing the configuration online.

In this article you will find out how to change the hot spare drive status without rebooting the server.

Solution

Download the StorCLI tool from BROADCOM's website: https://docs.broadcom.com/docs/007.0409.0000.0000_Unified_StorCLI.zip (latest feb 2018)

Install StorCLI based on the server OS (Windows/Linux/VMware)

Use "storcli64 /ccontroller_id/eenclosure_id/sslot_id add hotsparedrive [dgs=vd_id]" command to set the hot spare drive status to global or dedicated.

 

Parameters:

Parameter        Description

controller_id     Specifies the ID of a RAID controller card for drives.

enclosure_id     Specifies the ID of the enclosure where the drives are installed.

slot_id             Specifies a slot number.

vd_id               Specifies the ID of the virtual drive to which the dedicated hot spare drive belongs.

# Set the drive in slot 3 to a global hot spare drive.

domino:~# ./storcli64 /c0/e252/s3 add hotsparedrive
Controller = 0
Status = Success
Description = Add Hot Spare Succeeded.
# Set the drive in slot 3 to the dedicated hot spare drive for VD 0.

domino:~# ./storcli64 /c0/e252/s3 add hotsparedrive dgs=0
