How to troubleshooting the Eth-trunk LACP port issue

Issue Description

Eth-trunk is configured in static LACP mode, in which one or more member ports are down and cannot be up. As follows

Solution

Step 1: Use the display eth-trunk command to confirm the faulty

Use the display eth-trunk command to view the PortState column whose status is the Unselect port. The upper row is the local state. The partner is the peer state. If the the 4th of PortState bit is 1, it means the Synchronization is 1. NOTE This link is selected on the LACP device. The problem is in the peer side where Synchronization is still 0. It is necessary to further analyze the reasons why the peer device link is not selected.

Step 2: The cause of common ports is not selected.

(1) Different speed ports cannot be selected at the same time.

As shown below, two ports with different rates join the Eth-trunk in static LACP mode. Two ports cannot be selected at the same time. Synchronization of the ports at both ends is 0.

(2) The peer device packet cannot be received and the port cannot be selected.

As shown below, the GE1/0/3 port is in the unselect state, and the priority, the system ID, and the port information of the corresponding partner are all 0. This indicates that the port cannot receive the packet from the peer, and the peer information is already set to Defaults.

We can run the display lacp statistics eth-trunk command to check the number of LACP packets received and sent.

If the count of failed packet receive does not increase, you can confirm that the protocol layer does not receive LACP packets. You need to continue to do packet capture to confirm whether the local device product does not receive packets or the peer device does not send packets.

(3) The length of the received LACP packet is incorrect, and the port cannot be selected

The phenomenon is the same as (2), that is, the packet does not receive packets from the peer. The display eth-trunk command displays the default value of the peer. However, you can see that the count is increasing through the display lacp statistics eth-trunk

open the debug debugging trunk lagmsg or debugging trunk eth-trunk xx lagmsg to view debugging information. If the following information is printed, it indicates that the length of the LACP packet sent by the peer is incorrect. It is discarded after we check it. The LACP packet does not include the Ethernet header with a length of 110. The length shown in the figure below is 116.

(4) The port fiber is misconnected, resulting in negotiation failure

The port cannot be up. The display eth-trunk information shows that the local Synchronization bit is 1 and the peer is 0.

The PortNo is not a correspondence but a cross. Generally, this situation is caused by optical fiber misconnection, that is, the fiber that emits light at the A1 port is connected to the port A2 at the opposite end, but the light-receiving fiber is connected to the B2 port, and the light-receiving fiber at the B1 port is connected to the A2 port. In this way, if the Partner information carried in the received LACP packet does not match the local information, the peer Synchronization bit is set to 0.

(5) The peer port aggregation bit is not set and the port cannot be selected.

The aggregation bit is displayed 3th bit in the port state. When the peer sets this bit to 0, and it is carried in the packet, the local device cannot select the port, as shown in the following figure.
