A BFD Session Fails to Be Set up Between an NE40E and a non-Huawei UMG

Issue Description

1.         When an NE40E is connected to the optical interfaces of the Huawei UMG, the deployment is as follows:

The interfaces of the NE40E and the UMG are used to set up a BFD session.

The sub-interfaces of the NE40E and the UMG are used to transmit traffic. The GE interfaces of the UMG can transparently transmit BFD packets tagged with a VLAN ID.

In this case, BFD session establishment and the service transmission are separated logically. The configuration includes enabling BFD globally and setting up a static BFD session.

An example configuration is shown as follows.

bfd to_umg3_media bind peer-ip 192.168.0.2 interface GigabitEthernet2/0/1

 discriminator local 8002      

 discriminator remote 8003      

 detect-multiplier 5       

 min-tx-interval 10        

 min-rx-interval 10

2.         When an NE40E is connected to the optical interfaces of the UMG from Z supplier, the same deployment is used as in the preceding scenario. However, the BFD session fails to be set up between the NE40E and the UMG from Z supplier.

Handling Process

The on-site Huawei technical support personnel check the BFD session status and find that the BFD session cannot go Up.

Then they collect statistics about the BFD packets on the interfaces after clearing the historical interface statistics. Based on their observation, the number of sent BFD packets far exceeds the number of received BFD packets, which indicates that the NE40E does not receive BFD packets from the UMG.

They check the UMG from Z supplier and find that the optical interfaces cannot transparently transmit BFD packets tagged with a VLAN ID. Additionally, the optical interfaces do not support the configuration of BFD sessions statically. As a result, the BFD session fails to be set up.

Root Cause

The optical interfaces of the UMG from Z supplier cannot transparently transmit BFD packets tagged with a VLAN ID and do not support the configuration of BFD sessions statically.

Solution

When the NE40E is connected to the optical interfaces of the UMG from Z supplier, use the physical interface to set up a BFD session and to transmit services. Because the sub-interface of the UMG cannot transparently transmit BFD packets tagged with a VLAN ID, the sub-interface cannot be used. Meanwhile, configure a dynamic BFD session after enabling BFD globally.

An example configuration is shown as follows.

bfd to_umg2_media bind peer-ip 10.183.6.6 vpn-instance VPN_Media interface GigabitEthernet2/0/0 source-ip 10.183.6.5 auto
