Failing to Import/Export Data

Issue Description
When the import/export function of the VTL3500 is used, data cannot be imported/exported
between the virtual tape and the physical tape.

Handling Process
Step 1 Check whether the capacities of the virtual tape and the physical tape match with each other.
l When importing/exporting data between the virtual tape and the physical tape, ensure that
the model and capacity of the virtual tape device and the physical tape device match with
each other. If the capacities of the virtual tape device and the physical tape device are
different, a end-of-media-hit error occurs, which leads to the failure of importing/exporting
data.
l If data compression is enabled, ensure that the real capacities of the two devices match, rather
than the compression capacities. If the device does not have enough capacity to hold the
uncompressed data, data fails to be imported/exported.
Step 2 Check the status of the import/export operation.
Search the operation to which an error occurs in the import/export queue. No matter whether
the operation is complete, fails, or canceled, the operation is kept in the queue. If the operation
is processing, wait until it is complete.
Step 3 Check the barcode of the virtual tape.
When importing data from the physical tape, ensure that the virtual tape has a different barcode;
otherwise, data fails to be imported. Use the inventory function to upgrade the barcode and the
status.
Step 4 Check the status of the physical tape library and the device.
l Ensure that the physical tape library is not in the abnormal status. For example, the tape driver
may need to be cleaned or the tape needs to be moved to a proper location.
l Check event logs or syslog (/var/log/message file in Linux OS) and ensure that no error
message related to the physical tape library or driver exists.
Step 5 Check the element address of the physical tape library.
To import data, ensure that the driver of the VTL3500 is assigned according to the element
address of the physical tape library.
Step 6 Check event logs or system logs (/var/log/messages file in Linux OS).
Search the error message related to the physical tape library or the tape drive. If the fault is
located but cannot to be solved, contact Huawei Symantec technical support engineers.

Root Cause

Possible Causes
The capacities of the virtual tape and the physical tape do not match.
 Data is being imported/exported.
The virtual tapes have the same barcode.
The physical tape library is in the abnormal status.
The tape drives in the VTL3500 is not assigned according to the element address of the tape drives in the physical tape library.

To locate and troubleshoot the fault, do as follows:
