Files such as .gif, .bmp, and .txt Files Cannot Be Directly Opened in the Windows 2003 OS

Issue Description
In the Windows 2003 Server OS, users cannot directly open files such as .gif, .bmp, and .txt on the virtual gateway page.

Handling Process

    1. Choose Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs > Add or Remove Windows Components in the OS. Select Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration in the popup Windows Components Wizard and click Details. In the popup window, deselect For administrator groups, as shown in Figure 2.

    2. Choose Tools > Internet Options > Security in the network browser. Select Medium for the security level, as shown in Figure 3.

Root Cause

The Windows 2003 Server OS adopts strict security policies. As shown in Figure 1, the security level of the network browser is set to high. With this security level, the network browser has no right to run a new application program process, such as Notepad for opening .txt files and Windows Picture and Fax Viewer for opening .bmp or .jpg files.

Thus, when a user clicks Open, the shared file is downloaded to the local PC through the network browser. Since the network browser has no right to run a new application program process, an error prompt is displayed.
