Low-Quality Copper Transceivers Cause Instability of Services

Issue Description
A customer reports that two copper transceivers cannot be securely installed on ports of an S7700 switch. Although the copper transceivers can be used on the switch, they affect stability of services.

The problem persists when the two copper transceivers are installed on another two ports of the S7700 switch. The two copper transceivers can be securely installed and run normally on ports of an S5700 switch.

The following figure shows such a copper transceiver.

Handling Process
Inferred from the symptom, the problem may lie in the copper transceivers or the S7700 switch.

The barcodes and ESNs of the copper transceivers are all found in Huawei part database.

Because the copper transceivers can be securely installed and normally run the S5700 switch, field engineers first eliminated the possibility that the problem was caused by quality issue of the copper transceivers.

Later, engineers found that other copper transceivers can be used normally on the S7700 switch. So, they suspected that the original copper transceivers may not be Huawei-certified transceivers.

The following is the information about a problematic copper transceiver obtained using the display transceiver verbose command on the switch:

Root Cause
By comparing information about the normal and faulty copper transceivers, you can find two problems in the faulty copper transceivers:

1. The Connector Type and Wavelength(nm) fields are blank.

2. The displayed manufacturing date is not the real manufacturing date.

Therefore, the faulty copper transceivers are forged.
Solution
After being informed of the cause of the problem, the customer determined to contact the copper transceiver supplier for problem handling.
Suggestions
When similar problems occur, you are advised to check whether the optical or copper transceivers are forged first.
