Handling Process
Step 1  Change the communication port on the Backup Exec server.
Open and edit c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\serives with Notepad. Add the port for the Backup Exec, for example, port 11000, at the end of the file. The added part is marked red.

echo                7/tcp
echo                7/udp
discard             9/tcp    sink null
ndmp                                    11000/tcp                   #Network Data Management Protocol

Then, restart all Backup Exec services or the backup server.
Note: Change the default port 10000 to port 11000 after you change the default port and install all clients. If a firewall is deployed between the backup server and the client, you need to modify the firewall rules.

Step 2  Change the Backup Exec client port.
On the Windows 2003 server running the Backup Exec client, add the Backup Exec communication port (the red part in the following information) to the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\services file.

ndmp                                    11000/tcp                   #Network Data Management Protocol

Then, restart the Backup Exec client or the backup server.
Root Cause
Port 10000 required by the Backup Exec Remote Agent is occupied by another program. As a result, the Backup Exec client service fails to start.
