Issue Description
The VSM can manage third-party NEs using public management protocols. This section provides an example for configuring the VSM to manage third-party NEs such as Cisco 7200 series routers

Handling Process
Step 1     Configure a route between the NE and the VSM to ensure that they are routable to each other.

The route needs to be correctly configured between the NE and the VSM to ensure routability.

Step 2     On the NE, set the SNMP and Telnet parameters for the NE to communicate with the VSM. The following demonstration uses CISCO_R1 as an example. The configurations on CISCO_R3 are the same as those on CISCO_R1.

1.         Set the SNMP parameters on the NE.

CISCO_R1#configure terminal
CISCO_R1(config)#snmp-server community public RO
CISCO_R1(config)#snmp-server community private RW

2.         Set the SNMP trap parameters on the NE.

CISCO_R1(config)#snmp-server enable traps
CISCO_R1(config)#snmp-server trap-source fastEthernet 0/0
CISCO_R1(config)#snmp-server host 190.95.2.14 version 2c public

3.         On the NE, set Telnet parameters.

# Set the user name, password, and user level of Telnet.

CISCO_R1(config)#username cisco privilege 15 password cisco

# Set the authentication mode for the Telnet login to local authentication.

CISCO_R1(config)#line vty 0 15
CISCO_R1(config-line)#login local
CISCO_R1(config-line)#exit

Step 3     Add the NE to the VSM main topology.

1.         Right-click in the main topology and choose New > NE from the shortcut menu.

2.         On the left of the dialog box that is displayed, select 3rd-Party > SNMP Device as the NE type. On the right of the dialog box, set IP address to 190.120.2.101 and select SNMP V2:default for SNMP Parameters. Click  of NE Name. You can obtain the NE name

3.         Click OK to add the NE CISCO_R1 to the main topology.

4.         Repeat the preceding three steps to add CISCO_R3 to the VSM topology.

                                Step 4     Create a link.

1.         In the main topology, select the two NEs. Right-click an NE icon and choose Create Link from the shortcut menu.

2.         On the left of the dialog box that is displayed, set the link type to IP Link. Then set link parameters on the right.

3.         Click OK to create a link between two NEs.
