Even though the Web authentication and the ActiveX authentication are the mode base on the browser, they still have the differences as below:

1 The operation systems supported are different. ActiveX authentication can only run under the WINDOWS operation system, and don’t support the 64 bits IE browser; all of the operation system can use the Web authentication.
2 The security policies supported are different. Web authentication doesn’t support any host computer security policy. ActiveX authentication can support a part of host computer security policy ( anti-virus software、patch system、registration table、screen saver 、file-sharing、redundant account、printer sharing、open port、black and white software list、IE patch 、office patch、 database patch), but it doesn’t support the auto-recovery of the illegal program.

Web auth support only the identity authentication, not the security check-up.  axtiveX support the check-up policy, not the monitor policy. AxtiveX support only a part of operation system.
