Hard Drive Fault

Symptom

A hard drive fault occurs if any of the following occurs:

  • The hard drive fault indicator is on.
  • The hard drive activity indicator is off.
  • A hard drive fault alarm was generated.

Solution

  • Before removing a hard drive, determine its location to prevent misoperations. If another hard drive is removed, the RAID array will fail.
  • After a failed hard drive is disconnected from the hard drive backplane, wait for 30 seconds before removing it and inserting a new one. The alarm persists after a new hard drive is installed and will be cleared after the RAID array is rebuilt. Do not frequently hot-swap a hard drive to prevent new alarms.
  1. Remove the failed hard drive.
  2. Determine whether data can be restored.

    • For a RAID 0 array, data cannot be restored.

      Install a new hard drive and reconfigure the RAID array.

    • If the RAID array has a hot spare drive, the hot spare drive automatically replaces the failed hard drive and rebuilds data.
    • If the RAID array with redundancy does not have a hot spare drive, install a new hard drive.

  3. Install a new hard drive.

    LSI SoftRAID requires the new hard drive to be an empty drive.

    • If the RAID array has a hot spare drive, the new hard drive automatically becomes a new hot spare drive. No further action is required.
    • If the RAID array with redundancy does not have a hot spare drive, data is automatically rebuilt on the new hard drive. No further action is required.
