Data Protection upon Power Failures

If a large number of write operations are performed on a server, writing data into the cache is much faster than writing data into hard drives.

  • Enabling caching greatly improves the server write performance. If the server write pressure decreases or the cache is nearly full, data is migrated from the cache to hard drives.
  • Enabling caching also increases the data loss risk. If a server is powered off unexpectedly, data in the cache gets lost.

To improve the read/write performance and cache data security, you can configure supercapacitors for a server.

Supercapacitors start supplying power to the cache only when the cache voltage becomes lower than the preset value. If the cache voltage becomes higher than the preset value, RAID controller cards take over the job of cache power supply from the supercapacitors. In this manner, if the power supply of the server is interrupted unexpectedly, supercapacitors supply power to the cache; if the power supply of a server is normal, RAID controller cards supply power to the cache. In this way, data security is ensured.
