iBBU or Supercapacitor Fault

iBBU or Supercapacitor Fault

Symptom

The intelligent battery backup unit (iBBU) or supercapacitor of a RAID controller card on a server is faulty if any of the following occurs:

  • Server read/write is much slower.
  • The Configuration Utility screen of the controller card indicates that the iBBU or supercapacitor is abnormal.
  • Information shown in Figure 4-200 is displayed when the operating system restarts.

Solution

  1. Log in to the Configuration Utility of the controller card and check whether the iBBU or supercapacitor status is Present.

The Battery Backup parameter on the Controller Properties screen indicates the iBBU or supercapacitor status.

    • If yes, go to 5.
    • If no, go to 2.

  2. Power off the server, open the chassis cover, and check whether the iBBU or supercapacitor of the controller card is installed.

    • If yes, go to 4.
    • If no, go to 3.

  3. Install an iBBU or supercapacitor for the controller card based on the system configuration, and check whether the iBBU or supercapacitor status is Present.

    • If yes, go to 5.
    • If no, go to 7.

  4. Reinstall the iBBU or supercapacitor of the controller card and check whether the iBBU or supercapacitor status is Present.

    • If yes, go to 5.
    • If no, go to 6.

  5. Check the iBBU or supercapacitor properties.

    Check the iBBU properties:

    1. Check whether Design Capacity is 65535 mAh.
      • If yes, go to 6.
      • If no, go to 5.b.
    2. Check whether FullCharge Capacity is less than 600 mAh.
      • If yes, go to 6.
      • If no, go to 5.c.
    3. Check whether Remaining Capacity is less than 600 mAh.
      • If yes, go to 6.
      • If no, go to 7.

    Check the supercapacitor properties:

    1. Check whether Voltage is Normal.
      • If yes, go to 7.
      • If no, go to 6.

  6. Replace the iBBU or supercapacitor of the controller card and check whether the iBBU or supercapacitor status is Present and whether the fault is rectified.

    • If yes, no further action is required.
    • If no, go to 7.
