Replacing a PSU

Replacing a PSU

After removing a PSU, install a new one.

  • The server supports a maximum of six PSUs. The replacement method is the same. The following describes how to replace one PSU.
  • The same model of PSUs must be used in a server.
  • Only one PSU can be replaced at a time. After replacing a PSU, check the indicators on the newly installed PSU. Proceed with the next PSU only after ensuring that the newly installed one is in health status.

Workflow

Figure 6-46 Process

Procedure

  1. Determine the PSU to be replaced.

Figure 2 PSU slot numbers shows the PSU slot numbers.
    Figure 6-47 PSU slot numbers

  2. Remove the PSU.

    1. Check the power supply type.
      • If the AC power supply is used, go to 2.b.
      • If the DC power supply is used, go to 2.c.
    2. Remove the power cable of the AC PSU. See Figure 6-48.
Figure 6-48 Removing the power cable of the AC PSU

After the operation is complete, go to 2.e.

    3. Remove the electrode protection cover of the DC PSU. See (1) in Figure 6-49.
Figure 6-49 Removing the power cable of the DC PSU
    4. Remove the power cable of the DC PSU. See (2) in Figure 6-49.
    5. Press the latch on the PSU. See (1) in Figure 6-50.
Figure 6-50 Removing a PSU (taking an AC PSU as an example)
    6. Horizontally pull out the PSU from the chassis. See (2) in Figure 6-50.

Each ESD bag should hold only one PSU.

    7. Place the removed PSU into an ESD bag.

  3. Install a new PSU.

    1. Unpack the PSU packing case.
    2. Take the PSU out of its ESD bag.
    3. Horizontally insert the PSU into the chassis until the PSU snaps into the chassis.
Install the PSUs according to the following guidelines:
      • For the PSUs on the left side in the rear view of the chassis, install them with the latches on the upper side.
      • For the PSUs on the right side in the rear view of the chassis, install them with the latches on the lower side.
Figure 6-51 Installing a PSU (taking an AC PSU as an example)

  4. Install the power cable.

    1. Check the power supply type.
      • If the AC power supply is used, go to 4.b.
      • If the DC power supply is used, go to 4.c.
      NOTE:
      • Do not connect multiple PSUs to one air switch.
      • The breaking current for the air switch is 80 A (DC) or 16 A (AC).
      • The cross-sectional area of an AC power cable is greater than or equal to 2.5 mm2 (0.004 in.2).
      • The cross-sectional area of a DC power cable is greater than or equal to 16 mm2 (0.025 in.2).
    2. Insert the power cable into the AC PSU port in the chassis, as shown in Figure 6-52.
Figure 6-52 Installing an AC power cable

Go to 4.f after this step is finished.

    3. Remove the electrode protection cover of the DC PSU, as shown in Figure 6-53.
Figure 6-53 Removing the electrode protection cover
    4. Connect the O type terminal of the negative electrode to the NEG(–) wiring terminal of the DC PSU, and the O type terminal of the positive electrode to the RTN(+) wiring terminal of the DC PSU. See (1) in Figure 6-54.

Do not reversely install the power cable.

Figure 6-54 Installing a DC power cable
    5. Install the electrode protection cover of the DC PSU. See (2) in Figure 6-54.
    6. Connect the other end of the power cable to the PDU according to the power cable connection guidelines.

  5. Check the indicator status.

For details, see AC PSU and DC PSU.
