Stateless Computing Overview


When a compute node in an IT system is faulty, the maintenance engineer has to replace the hardware, configure the compute node data, and modify network properties, such as the MAC address and WWN. The troubleshooting procedure is complex, error-prone, and time-consuming.

Huawei provides stateless computing to address this issue by decoupling configuration from physical devices. Stateless computing allows the compute node hardware configuration to be extracted and saved as a profile. The management module (MM910) can apply the profile to the compute node to implement automatic configuration during site deployment, parts replacement or service migration.

Stateless computing allows the compute node hardware configuration (including BIOS, NIC, and UUID configuration) to be extracted and saved as a profile. The profile can be configured offline, migrated, remotely deployed in batches, exported, or imported.

Application Scenarios

  • Unified deployment

    Data center deployment and capacity expansion involve a large number of devices and configuration operations. Stateless computing simplifies configurations in the following ways:

    • Group management: Classify compute nodes into different groups by service type or property. The compute nodes in a group share the same configuration. This allows batch configuration of compute nodes in a group.
    • Offline configuration: Associate configuration with compute node slots. Once a compute node is installed in a slot, the configuration associated with the slot will be automatically delivered and loaded to the compute node.
  • Parts replacement

    After a faulty compute node is replaced, the profile is automatically delivered and loaded to the newly installed compute node. The new compute node will inherit all of the original configuration, including the MAC address and WWN. This function enables plug-and-play of compute nodes.

  • Service migration

    Stateless computing enables the services of a faulty compute node to be migrated to a standby compute node, implementing seamless network switchover.
