Installing a Hard Disk

Installing a Hard Disk

You need to install a hard disk to replace the original one.

Scenarios

Install a hard disk in any of the following scenarios:

  • A faulty hard disk needs to be replaced.
  • A hard disk of a newer model needs to be used.
  • A hard disk without no free space needs to be replaced.
  • A hard disk needs to be added.
NOTE:

You do not need to power off the compute node when installing a hard disk.

The CH222 supports a maximum of 15 hard disks. Figure 5-5 shows the hard disk installation positions and numbers.

Prerequisites

Conditions

Refer to Safety Instructions.

Data

  • Ensure the CH222 position in the rack, chassis, and slot.
  • Ensure installation position of the hard disk in the CH222. For details about the installation position, see Appearance.

Locate the hard disk to be removed based on the preceding information, and label it to prevent misoperations.

Tools

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) gloves.

Hardware

Spare hard disk.

Procedure

  1. Press the release button on the hard disk drawer panel. See step (1) in Figure 5-6.

Figure 5-6 Pulling out the hard disk drawer

  2. Hold the hard disk drawer ejector lever and pull the hard disk drawer out of the chassis horizontally. See step (3) in Figure 5-6.

The pulled out disk expansion drawer affects heat dissipation of hard disks. Insert the disk expansion drawer to the chassis within 5 minutes. Otherwise, hard disks will be overheated, which may result in hard disk failures and data loss.

  3. Take the spare hard disk out of its ESD bag.
  4. Fully open the ejector lever on the hard disk and insert the hard disk until it does not move. See step (1) in Figure 5-7.

  5. Ensure that the handle is fastened to the beam, and close the handle to completely insert the HDD into the slot. See step (2) in Figure 5-7.
  6. Insert the hard disk drawer into the chassis slot horizontally. See step (1) in Figure 5-8.

  7. Lower the ejector lever until it snaps into the spring. See step (2) in Figure 5-8.
  8. Follow-up Procedure.

The following is only for reference:
    • If the original hard drive is not in the RAID group, the new hard drive becomes idle. You are advised to set the new hard drive as a global or dedicated hot spare drive. The procedure ends.
    • If the original RAID array (for example, RAID 0) does not support redundancy, reconfigure RAID. The procedure ends.
    • If the original RAID array is redundant and has a hot spare drive, the new hard drive becomes idle. You are advised to set the new hard drive as a global or dedicated hot spare drive. The procedure ends.
    • If the original RAID array is redundant but does not have a hot spare drive, data is automatically rebuilt to the new hard drive. The procedure ends.

For details, see Huawei V2 and V3 Server RAID Controller Card User Guide .
