Scenarios

Configure the FCoE gateway port mapping in Transparent mode.

  • When the FCoE gateways work in Full Fabric mode, there is no port mapping.
  • When the FCoE gateways work in Transparent mode and connect to external FC switches, it is recommended that each FCoE gateway connect to only one FC switch.
    • In Transparent mode, the FCoE gateway registers converged network adapters (CNAs) or host bus adapters (HBAs) with external FC switches and transparently transmits data over only one connected external port. Though the FCoE gateway simultaneously connects to multiple FC switches, the CNAs or HBAs are registered with one FC switch. The connected links and FC switches do not share loads.
    • When the FCoE gateway connects to multiple FC switches, the links support failovers. However, the FC switch with which the CNAs or HBAs are registered is randomly selected, which causes troubles for network management and configuration.
  • In Transparent mode, external ports on the FCoE gateway connect to the FC switch, and internal ports on the FCoE gateway connect to CNAs or HBAs. The default mapping between external and internal ports is as follows:
    • Each internal port is mapped to all external ports.
    • The FCoE gateway selects one external port for registering CNAs or HBAs with the external FC switch.
    • When the FCoE gateway works in Transparent mode, the FCoE gateway uses multiple external ports (up to eight ports) to connect one FC switch for load sharing.

      As the registration port is randomly selected, multiple CNAs or HBAs may be registered with the external FC switch over the same port, causing uneven traffic distribution. When multiple links connect to an FC switch, manually change the FCoE gateway port mapping to achieve even traffic distribution.

The following takes the networking shown in Figure 4-4 as an example to illustrate the FCoE gateway port mapping in Transparent mode.

  • The E9000 chassis houses a maximum of 16 CNAs (MZ510) and two CX311s in slots 2X and 3X.
  • Two external ports (Ext1:0 and Ext2:1) on each FCoE gateway connect to one external FC switch. Two FC switches connect to FC storage devices respectively.
  • Port 1 on the MZ510 connects to the FCoE gateway on the CX311 in slot 2X, and port 2 on the MZ510 connects to the FCoE gateway on the CX311 in slot 3X.
  • The FCoE gateway does not directly connect to the FCoE gateway. Eight internal ports on the FCoE gateway are evenly distributed for CNA registration. You can change the mapping between internal ports and external ports to evenly distribute traffic for CNA registration.
  • Four internal ports (connected to the converged switching plane) as a group are mapped to one external port. Primary mapping (PrimaryTFPortMap) and backup mapping (BackupTFPortMap) must be specified for external ports. The FCoE gateway in slot 2X is used as an example. Table 4-13 describes the mapping between the internal and external ports. Port mapping for the FCoE gateway in slot 3X is similar to that in Table 4-13.

  • ExtX:Y: ExtX indicates the X external port on the FCoE gateway. Y indicates the port number.
  • IntX:Y: IntX indicates the FCoE gateway port connected to the converged switching plane. Y indicates the FCoE gateway port number.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the FCoE gateway CLI.
  2. Configure the work mode.

    Set the FCoE gateway work mode to Transparent.

    For details, see Configuring the Work Mode.

  3. Configure the port mapping.

    1. Enter the configuration mode.
      FCoE_GW: admin> admin start 
      FCoE_GW (admin): admin> config edit
    2. Configure the port mapping.

      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin>set config port internal port number

      For example, set the mapping for internal port 12 against Table 4-13 by performing the following operations:

      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> set config port 12 
       
        A list of attributes with formatting and current values will follow. 
        Enter a new value or simply press the ENTER key to accept the current value. 
        If you wish to terminate this process before reaching the end of the list 
        press 'q' or 'Q' and the ENTER key to do so.

    4. Check that the port mapping is correct by viewing port configuration information.
