Changing the VLAN ID and Domain ID

Scenarios

When switch modules are stacked, change the default virtual local area network (VLAN) ID (1002) and domain ID (1) for internal ports (connected to the converged switching plane) on the FCoE gateway in the standby switch module. The following assumes that the FCoE gateway works in Full Fabric mode. If the FCoE gateway works in Transparent mode, you only need to modify the VLAN ID.

In the network shown in Figure 4-5, the CX311s and converged switching planes are stacked but the FCoE gateways are not stacked. After the stacking system is complete, the FCoE gateway assigns a virtual Media Access Control (MAC) address to each host port for transmitting FCoE gateway packets based on the FCoE gateway domain ID and MAC addresses of the internal ports on the FCoE gateway. By default, the domain ID for FCoE gateways is 1, which leads to identical virtual MAC addresses. The converged switching planes are stacked, all FCoE gateway packets are forwarded in the same converged switching plane, and the default VLAN ID 1002 is used. These conditions may cause exceptions in data forwarding.

Data

  • Domain ID of the FCoE gateway in the standby switch module, for example, 3.
  • VLAN ID for the internal ports on the FCoE gateway in the standby switch module, for example, 1003.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the FCoE gateway CLI.
  2. Change the domain ID.

    1. Enter the configuration mode.
      FCoE_GW: admin> admin start 
      FCoE_GW (admin): admin> config edit
    2. Change the domain ID.
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin>set config switch 
        A list of attributes with formatting and current values will follow. 
        Enter a new value or simply press the ENTER key to accept the current value. 
        If you wish to terminate this process before reaching the end of the list 
        press 'q' or 'Q' and the ENTER key to do so.

        The config named default has been saved.

    4. Activate the configuration.

      The configuration takes effect immediately without a restart.

        The currently active configuration will be activated.

  3. Change the VLAN ID for the internal ports on the FCoE gateway.

    1. Configure zones.
      FCoE_GW: admin> admin start 
      FCoE_GW (admin): admin> config edit
    2. Create a VLAN ID.

      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan VLAN ID create

      For example, set the VLAN ID for the internal ports on the FCoE gateway to 1003 by running the following command:

      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1003 create
    3. Remove internal ports 12 to 19 (connected to the converged switching plane) on the FCoE gateway from VLAN 1002.
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1002 remove port 12 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1002 remove port 13 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1002 remove port 14 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1002 remove port 15 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1002 remove port 16 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1002 remove port 17 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1002 remove port 18 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1002 remove port 19
    4. Configure a new VLAN for internal ports 12 to 19 on the FCoE gateway.

      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan VLAN ID add port port number

      For example, create VLAN 1003 for internal ports 12 to 19 on the FCoE gateway by running the following commands:

      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1003 add port 12 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1003 add port 13 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1003 add port 14 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1003 add port 15 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1003 add port 16 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1003 add port 17 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1003 add port 18 
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> vlan 1003 add port 19
    5. Delete the default VLAN 1002 from the FCF module.
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> fcf 0EFC00 remove vlan 1002
    6. Add a VLAN to the FCoE gateway.

      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> fcf 0EFC00 add vlan VLAN ID

      For example, set the VLAN ID for the internal ports on the FCoE gateway to 1003 by running the following command:

      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> fcf 0EFC00 add vlan 1003
    7. Save the configuration.
      FCoE_GW (admin-config): admin> config save 
       
        The config named default has been saved. 
       
      FCoE_GW (admin): admin> 
    8. Activate the configuration.

      The configuration takes effect immediately without a restart.

      FCoE_GW (admin): admin> config activate 
       
        The currently active configuration will be activated. 
        Please confirm (y/n): [n] y

    9. Run the vlan list command to view port VLANs.
      FCoE_GW: admin> vlan list

  4. Add all ports on the converged switching plane that are connected to the server to a VLAN.

    1. Log in to the converged switching plane CLI.

      For details, see Logging In to the CLI of Each Switching Plane.

    2. Add all ports that are connected to the server to a VLAN.

      [~CX311_C] interface port number

      [~CX311_C-port number] port hybrid tagged vlan VLAN ID

      For example, add port 10ge 3/1/1 to VLAN 1003 (for internal ports on the FCoE gateway) by running the following commands:

      [~CX311_C] interface 10ge 3/1/1 
      [~CX311_C-10ge 3/1/1] port hybrid tagged vlan 1003

  5. Add all internal ports on the converged switching plane that are connected to the FCoE gateway to a VLAN.

    Ports 10ge 3/20/1 to 10ge 3/20/8 on the converged switching plane are connected to the FCoE gateway. These ports are added to the VLAN for the internal ports on the FCoE gateway.

    For example, add port 10ge 3/20/1 to VLAN 1003 (VLAN for the internal ports on the FCoE gateway) by running the following commands:
