Connecting Ethernet Cables

Context

  • Before deploying Ethernet cables, test cable connectivity.
  • Network cables used outdoors must be buried underground or routed through steel pipes and cannot be led into the equipment room aerially.
  • Keep signal cables more than 10 cm away from power cables.

Category 5 or higher twisted pairs are recommended for the GE electrical ports. Category 6A STP or higher twisted pairs are recommended for the 10GE electrical ports.

Table 8-1 describes the supported cabling types for a 10GBASE-T Ethernet electrical port.

In a harsh environment, alien crosstalk may cause data loss or performance deterioration on Category 6 unshielded twisted pairs. The transmission distance of a Category 6 unshielded twisted pair cannot exceed 37 m in this situation.

This cabling system can meet the requirements for 10GBASE-T performance.

NOTE:

The specification of Category 6 twisted pairs is only 250 MHz, but they must provide 500 MHz bandwidth according to TSB-155 to ensure 10GBASE-T compliance.

Tools and Accessories

  • ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves
  • Diagonal pliers
  • Cable ties
  • Marker
  • Network cable labels

Procedure

  1. Determine the number and type of ports to be connected and plan the cabling routes.
  2. Select Ethernet cables of appropriate quantity and lengths according to the number of ports and measured cabling distances.
  3. Attach temporary labels to both ends of each Ethernet cable and number them corresponding to port numbers.

  4. Route and connect Ethernet cables.

    When a large number of cables need to be connected, arrange the cables in the cabinet, and then install cable connectors. Cable connectors made onsite must be securely attached, reliable, neat, and comply with related regulations.

    NOTE:
    Requirements for cables connected to 10GE electrical ports are as follows:
    • In a newly built equipment room, Category 6A STP or higher twisted pairs are recommended. Category 6A STP and Category 7 cables can avoid alien crosstalk while having no special installation requirements. In addition, they can be used with other types of cables. It is not recommended to cut Category 6A STP and Category 7 cables and make connectors for the cables onsite, because this may degrade performance of these cables.
    • If Category 6 shielded or unshielded twisted pairs are used in an equipment room and the cabling systems can meet requirements of TSB-155, route these cables according to the following rules:
      • Separate these cables from other types of cables. If they must be routed in the same cable trough with other types of cables, separate them using a metal plate.
      • Separate cables as much as possible at the outlet and keep the cables parallel with each other. Most alien crosstalk appears within 20 m away from the outlet. To reduce alien crosstalk, do not bundle cables in the first 5 m to 20 m.
      • Replace Category 6 connectors with Category 6A connectors.

  5. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves. Ensure that the ESD wrist strap is grounded and in close contact with your wrist.
  6. Connect Ethernet cables to ports of the switch.

    Find the ports matching the numbers on the Ethernet cables and plug cable connectors to the ports. After verifying that all Ethernet cables are correctly connected, go to 7.

  7. Bundle Ethernet cables.

    Arrange the Ethernet cables to make them parallel, and then bundle them with cable ties according to Table 8-2. Use diagonal pliers to cut off redundant cable ties. Bundle cables loosely, as shown in Figure 8-1.

    NOTE:
    You are advised to add no more than 12 cables in a bundle. A bundle cannot have more than 24 cables.

  8. Replace all the temporary labels with permanent labels on the Ethernet cables.
