Using BIOS/BootLoader to Upgrade the System Software

Using BIOS/BootLoader to Upgrade the System Software

Applicable Products and Versions

This example applies to the CE12800/CE6800/CE5800 V100R001C00 or later.

This example applies to the CE7800 V100R003C00 or later.

This example applies to the CE8800 V100R006C00 or later.

This example applies to the CE12800E V200R002C50 or later.

Networking Requirements

When you cannot enter the command line window through the console port or the system restarts frequently, BIOS/BootLoader can be used to upgrade the system software.

As shown in Figure 2-1, the device connects to the PC.

Figure 2-1 Networking for upgrading the system software through BIOS/BootLoader
NOTE:

The procedure of upgrading the system software using BootLoader is similar to that using BIOS. In this example, the BIOS menu is used to upgrade the system software on a switch running V200R001C00.

Configuration Notes

When using BIOS to upgrade the system software, pay attention to the following points:

  • On the CE12800 and CE12800E, the Mini USB/Micro USB port and console port provide the same functions. The Mini USB/Micro USB port can be also used in this example. When using the Mini USB/Micro USB port, install the driver of the Mini USB/Micro USB port on the PC and use the Mini USB/Micro USB cable to connect the device to the PC.

  • When the device is equipped with dual MPUs, use BIOS to upgrade the system software on both the active and standby MPUs. When upgrading the active or standby MPU, ensure that the other MPU is in unregistered state (for example, the other MPU is removed during upgrade of one MPU). Otherwise, the upgrade may fail.

  • The CE12800 is used as an example. On the CE5800 and 6800, connect devices according to actual interfaces.

  • To prevent configuration file loss before system software upgrade, back up the configuration file.

  • When BIOS is used to upgrade the system software, the device supports file transfer through TFTP only.

  • If the download is normal, consecutive comment tags (#) are displayed. If consecutive Ts are displayed, the network is disconnected. Check the network connection and try it again.

  • During system software loading, ensure that the TFTP application is enabled until file transfer is complete.

  • Before upgrading the system software, ensure that there is sufficient storage space. Check whether there is an existing file with the same name as the file to be upgraded. If there is an existing file with the same name as the file to be upgraded, the file to be upgraded will overwrite the existing file during upgrade through BIOS. You can select 5 in the BIOS menu to view device file information and storage space.

Configuration Roadmap

The configuration roadmap is as follows:

  1. Configure the TFTP server and upload the target system software to the TFTP working directory before using BIOS to upgrade the system software. This example uses a PC as the TFTP server and connects the management interface of the device to the network adapter of the PC so that they can set up a TFTP connection.
  2. Log in to the device through the console port and restart the device to enter the BIOS menu.
  3. Set parameters for connecting to the TFTP server in the BIOS menu so that the device can communicate with the TFTP server, and download the target system software to the device using TFTP.
  4. Upgrade the system software by BIOS, enter the command line window.

Procedure

  1. Run TFTP software on the PC and specify the path for storing the system software.

    NOTE:

The device is not delivered with the TFTP server software; therefore, the customer needs to buy the TFTP server software and install it. The TFTPD32 program is recommended.

Run the TFTP server program on the PC and configure the PC, as shown in Figure 2-2.

Figure 2-2 Configuring the TFTP server
    • Click Browse to set the directory for storing the new system software.
    • Enter the TFTP server address in Server Interface, for example, 192.168.1.11. Generally, this IP address is automatically set by the system.

  2. Log in to the device through the console port.
  3. Restart the device. Press Ctrl+B to enter the BIOS menu when the following information is displayed.
