BIOS Overview

The basic input/output system (BIOS) is the most basic software code loaded on a computer hardware system. As underlying software of the operating system (OS), BIOS is an abstraction layer between computer hardware and the OS. It is used to configure hardware to prepare for running the OS.Figure 1-1 shows the position of BIOS in the system.

The BIOS is stored in the serial peripheral interface (SPI) flash memory. It performs the power-on self-test (POST), initializes CPUs and memory, detects IO devices, identifies boot devices, and boots the system. The BIOS also provides advanced configuration and power interface (ACPI) and hot swap.

Huawei Brickland-based server is developed based on AMI Codebase. The server has a proprietary BIOS that provides high scalability and supports customization and various out-of-band and inband configuration functions.
