Connecting a Ground Cable

Connecting a Ground Cable

Scenarios

  • When AC or high-voltage DC power supplies are used, the chassis is grounded over the protective earth (PE) conductor of each power cable, and the chassis ground terminal needs to be grounded as well. The server does not provide a chassis ground cable at delivery, so the customer needs to prepare a ground cable. The cable model must be determined based on the site requirement.
  • When DC power supplies are used, the PSU ground terminal and chassis ground terminal must be grounded. The server does not provide a chassis ground cable at delivery. The ground cable model must be selected based on the site requirement.
NOTE:

The customer needs to prepare a UL 10 AWG yellow and green adhesive chassis ground cable with a maximum length of 2 m. The ring tongue of the chassis ground terminal requires M6 screws and must be configured based on the site requirements.

Hardware

A ground cable has OT terminals at both ends and its cross-sectional area is 25 mm² (0.04 in.²), as shown in Figure 3-19.

NOTE:
  • The devices in a rack, such as the power distribution box (PDB) and chassis, use the same type of ground cables.
  • The resistance between the chassis and the earth must be less than 5 ohms.

Procedure

  1. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves.
  2. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screw in the ground hole on the rear of the server, and connect one end of the ground cable to the removed screw. Install the screw in the ground hole and tighten the screw.

  3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screw on the ground bar in the rack and connect the other end of the ground cable to the removed screw. You are advised to choose the screw nearest to the server. Install the screw in the ground bar and tighten the screw.

    NOTE:

All the ground cables in the rack are connected to the busbars on two sides of the rack. The external ground cables are connected to the M8 ground screws at the top and bottom of the rack. The ground cable of the chassis can be connected to a near busbar of the rack with the M6 screw.
