Installing a CPU

Installing a CPU

  • Only the personnel authorized by Huawei and Huawei technical support personnel can install a CPU in Huawei servers.
  • Do not wear ESD gloves because they may damage the pins on the CPU socket.
  • The RH5885 V3 supports two types of CPU configurations: two CPUs in sockets CPU1 and CPU2, and four CPUs in sockets CPU1, CPU2, CPU3, and CPU4.

  1. Power off the server. For details, see Powering On and Off the RH5885 V3. Remove all power cables.
  2. Remove the chassis cover of the RH5885 V3. For details, see Removing the Chassis Cover.
  3. Remove the air duct of the RH5885 V3. For details, see Removing the Air Duct.
  4. Wear an ESD wrist strap or ESD gloves. For details, see Safety Instructions.
  5. Take the spare CPU out of the ESD bag.
  6. Ensure that the CPU socket does not have bent pins or foreign objects.

If a CPU socket has bent pins or foreign objects, stop installing the CPU and contact Huawei technical support.

  7. Use a tissue to clean off any residual oil, thermal paste, or foreign objects from the CPU or heat sink before installation.
  8. Wear finger cots and latch the CPU into one side of the CPU installation tool. Ensure that the triangle marks (polarities) on the CPU, CPU socket cover, and CPU socket face the same direction. Figure 5-64 shows the triangle marks (polarities). Figure 5-65 shows the operation procedure.

    Figure 5-64 Triangle marks (polarities)

Figure 5-65 Latching a CPU into one side of a CPU installation tool

  9. Pull out the other side of the CPU installation tool and squeeze the tool downward to latch the CPU. See Figure 5-66.

Figure 5-66 Pulling out the other side of a CPU installation tool

  10. Latch the CPU into the other side of the CPU installation tool. See Figure 5-67.

Figure 5-67 Latching a CPU into the other side of a CPU installation tool

  11. Ensure that the CPU is properly latched into the two sides of the CPU installation tool. See Figure 5-68.

Figure 5-68 CPU installation tool with the CPU inside

  12. Determine the area on the heat sink for contacting the CPU, and paste thermal compound in the center of the area.

Paste appropriate amount of thermal compound evenly on the CPU surface.

Use a syringe to measure the thermal compound for pasting to the CPU. Table 5-6 lists the quantity of thermal compound used for different chip sizes.

Table 5-6 Quantity of thermal compound

    Chip Size

    Quantity of Thermal Compound

    50 mm x 50 mm (1.97 in. x 1.97 in.)

    0.4 ml

    40 mm x 40 mm (1.57 in. x 1.57 in.)

    0.3 ml

    30 mm x 30 mm (1.18 in. x 1.18 in.)

    0.2 ml

    20 mm x 20 mm (0.79 in. x 0.79 in.)

    0.15 ml

Figure 5-69 shows the methods for pasting thermal compound. These methods are described as follows:

    • Single-point pasting: for a small socket.
    • Single-line pasting: for a long socket.
    • Dual-line pasting, cross pasting, five-point pasting, and S-shape pasting apply to a large square socket.

  13. Use a clean card to smear the thermal compound over the entire center of the CPU and ensure that the CPU installation tool is free of thermal compound.

The thermal compound layer is as thick as a common piece of paper. Figure 5-70 shows the smeared thermal compound layer. Ensure that the thermal compound is evenly and fully painted.

Figure 5-70 Smeared thermal compound layer

  14. Squeeze two sides of the CPU installation tool and raise the tool with the CPU inside. See Figure 5-71.

    • To prevent damage to the CPU, CPU socket, or mainboard, ensure that the securing rod on the CPU socket is fully open before you install the CPU in the socket.
    • When you close the securing rod, do not exert excessive force or touch any components and gild pins on the CPU.
    • Do not move the CPU if it is not correctly placed to avoid any twisted pins. Lift the CPU until it is out of the socket, and then place it in the socket properly.

Hold the CPU installation tool with the CPU inside horizontally, and place the tool vertically downward into the CPU socket by avoiding touching the securing rods. See step (1) in Figure 5-72.

Ensure that the CPU is properly installed. Figure 5-73 shows an incorrectly placed CPU.

  15. Close the CPU load plate. See step (2) in Figure 5-72.
  16. Lower the securing rod near the or label. See step (3) in Figure 5-72.
  17. Lower the securing rod near the or label. See step (4) in Figure 5-72.
  18. Align the heat sink with the fastening studs on the CPU socket, and place the heat sink on the CPU. See step (1) in Figure 5-74.

  19. Tighten the four screws to secure the heat sink. You are advised to tighten every two screws in the diagonal direction. See step (2) in Figure 5-74.
