B

BMC

Baseboard management controller. The BMC complies with the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) standard, responsible for collecting, processing, and storing sensor signals, and monitoring the operating status of each component.

ejector lever

An item or part on the panel, used to insert or remove a blade in or out of a slot.

F

server

A special computer that provides various services for clients over a network.

K

KVM

Keyboard, video, and mouse. A switch that provides public video, keyboard and mouse for all server blades.

mezzanine module

A card connected to the mainboard through the connector, level to the mainboard. It is used on a device which has high requirement for space usage.

M

panel

The front-most element of a server, perpendicular to the PCB, which serves to mount connectors, indicators, controls and mezzanine modules, and also seals the front of the subrack for airflow and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

Q

GE

Extended and enhanced Ethernet standards against traditional sharing media, which is compatible with 10M and 100M Ethernet and complies with IEEE 802.3z.

R

RAID

Redundant array of independent disks (RAID) is a storage technology that combines multiple hard disks into a logical unit in several ways called "RAID levels", providing high storage and redundancy performance.

hot swap

In a running system, insertion or removal of a blade or component does not affect normal running of the system.

redundancy

The ability of a system to keep functioning normally in the event of a device failure by having a backup device automatically replace the faulty one.

S

SATA

Serial Advanced Technology Attachment

SEL

System event log. A non-volatile storage area and associated interfaces for storing system platform events for later retrieval.

SSD

A solid-state disk (SSD) consists of a control unit and a storage unit (flash chip). Simply, it is a hard disk made up of a solid-state electronic storage chip array. The interface specifications, definition, functions, and usage of an SSD are the same as those of a common hard disk.

U

U

A unit defined in International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60297-1 to measure the height of a cabinet, chassis, or subrack. 1 U = 44.45 mm = 1.75 in.

V

voltage regulator

A device that maintains the terminal voltage of a generator or other voltage source within required limits despite variations in input voltage or load.

Y

Ethernet

A LAN technology that uses the carrier sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) media access control method. The Ethernet network is highly reliable and easy to maintain. The speed of an Ethernet interface can be 10 Mbit/s, 100 Mbit/s, 1000 Mbit/s, or 10,000 Mbit/s.
