Logging In to the Server Over a Serial Port Using the PuTTY

You can log in to the server over a serial port by using the PuTTY in any of the following scenarios:

  • The server is configured for the first time at a new site, and you need to perform initial configuration.
  • The server cannot be remotely connected to because the network is faulty, and you need to locate the fault.

Ensure that the following requirements are met:

  • The PC is connected to the server over a serial cable.
  • PuTTY is installed.

    You can download PuTTY from chiark website. You are advised to use the latest version of PuTTY, otherwise you may fail to log in to the sever.

  • User name and Password for logging in to the server to be connected

Procedure

  1. Double-click PuTTY.exe.

    The PuTTY Configuration window is displayed.

  2. In the navigation tree, choose Connection > Serial.
  3. Set the login parameters.

    The following are the examples:

    • Serial Line to connect to: COMn
    • Speed (baud): 115200
    • Data bits: 8
    • Stop bits: 1
    • Parity: None
    • Flow control: None

    n indicates the serial port number, and the value is an integer.

  4. In the navigation tree, choose Session.
  5. Select Connection type in Serial, as shown in Figure 9-19.

  6. Click Open.

    The PuTTY window and login as: are displayed, waiting you to enter a user name.

  7. Enter a user name and password by following instructions.

    After login, the server host name is displayed on the left of the prompt.
