Data Storage Latency of the ESXi Host Occasionally Increases Due to the LRO Function of the CVM NIC

Problem Description
Table 5-285 Basic information

Item

Information

Source of the Problem

FusionCube troubleshooting

Intended Product

FusionCube V100R002C50, C60, C70, and 3.0.1

Release Date

2018-05-28

Keyword

ESXi, data storage, latency, LRO

Symptom

The physical device write latency of ESXi host data storage occasionally lasts for seconds, as shown in the following figure.

The write latency observed on FusionStorage is normal, as shown in the following figure.

Alarm information: ESXi host: Device naa.*** performance has deteriorated. I/O latency increased from average value of ** microseconds to *** microseconds.

Key Process and Cause Analysis

If related information is found on the official VMware website, the Linux TCP performance of the VMXNET3 device may be low when the LRO is enabled on the VM. By default, LRO is enabled on the VMXNET2 (enhanced) and VMXNET3 devices. In some cases, the performance of the Linux TCP/IP stack is low when the data packets generated by the LRO are processed.

The LRO function of the CVM NIC is repeatedly enabled and disabled. The result shows that the data storage latency is back to normal when the LRO function is disabled, and the latency increases again when the LRO function is enabled. Therefore, the problem is caused by a bug in the LRO function of the VMware VM NIC.

Conclusion and Solution

Solution

  1. Log in to the CVM and switch to the root user.
  2. Run the ifconfig command to check the interface name corresponding to the storage IP address. The interface is an iSCSI interface.

  3. Run the following command to disable the LRO function of the iSCSI interface:

    ethtool –K eth1 lro off

  4. Run the following command to check the LRO function status of the iSCSI interface:

    ethtool –k eth1

  5. Run the following commands to create a startup parameter file and edit the file:

    vi /etc/rc.d/rc.local

    /sbin/ethtool –K eth1 lro off

  6. Run the following commands to create a startup sequence file and edit the file:

    vi /etc/rc.d/rclocal

    case "$1" in

    start)

    if ! test -x /etc/init.d/rc.local ; then

    echo '/etc/rc.local is not exsit!'

    exit 1

    fi

    /etc/init.d/rc.local &

    ;;

    stop)

    ;;

    esac

  7. Run the following command to modify the permission of the file:

    chmod 0755 /etc/rc.d/rc.local /etc/rc.d/rclocal

  8. Run the following command to load the startup item:

    chkconfig --add rclocal

  9. Repeat steps 1 to 8 to disable the LRO function of the CVM NIC on other nodes.

Keyword

Installation, RH2288 V3, XH628 V3

Symptom

The VMware vSphere 6.5U1 ESXi fails to be installed.

Key Process and Cause Analysis

Key process

The Asset Tag is read from the BMC by the BIOS and then displayed on the OS.

According to the data read by the BIOS of the faulty board from the BMC, the read result of the Product Asset Tag is 00 80 00. As a result, the BIOS fails to display data.

After confirmation, a null character string is written to the board when the board is customized. As a result, the BIOS reads the preceding information.

Conclusion and Solution

Solution

Upgrade the BMC firmware to the latest version based on the version mapping table and perform initialization again. If the initialization still fails, perform the following steps:

  1. Use ElabelTool tool to change the values of Product Asset Tag and Chassis Part Number to non-empty content, for example, to assettag and 123 respectively.
  2. Reset the OS.

Item

Information

Source of the Problem

FusionCube troubleshooting

Intended Product

All FusionCube versions

Release Date

2018-05-28

Keyword

VMware, data storage, attaching failure

Symptom
  1. After the system is powered on, the data storage provided by the FusionStorage volume on the ESXi host is unavailable.
  2. When the data storage is manually attached, an error message is displayed, indicating that an error occurs during the host configuration process.
Key Process and Cause Analysis

View the ESXi host log file /var/log/vmkernel.log. The following information is displayed, indicating that the storage device is locked.

The preceding information indicates that the problem occurs because the shared storage device is locked by another remote ESXi host. As a result, the data storage file system on the storage device cannot be attached and the data storage is unavailable.

Conclusion and Solution

Solution

Log in to all ESXi hosts that are mapped to faulty storage devices and manually unlock the devices. The procedure is as follows:

Log in to the ESXi CLI. In the /var/log/vmkernel.log file, view the name of the faulty storage device, for example, naa.6888603000000002000c538f78225036:1. Then, run the vmkfstools -B /vmfs/devices/disks/ naa.6888603000000002000c538f78225036:1 command, and enter 0 to unlock the device.

Perform the preceding operations on other ESXi hosts. Log in to the ESXi host or vCenter using vClient and scan for storage devices. The host automatically mounts the VMFS to restore the data storage.
