Connecting a Serial Cable

Connecting a Serial Cable

If a server provides a DB9 serial port, the serial port serves as the system serial port by default. You can set it as the iMana serial port on the iMana command-line interface (CLI). For details, see the iMana user guide of the server.

The following describes the operation scenarios for the serial port:

  • System serial port: used for monitoring the operating system (OS) status.
  • iMana serial port: used for logging in to the iMana CLI and monitoring the iMana status when you do not know the IP address of the iMana network port.

The commands executed over the iMana serial port are the same as those executed over the iMana network port. For details about the commands, see the iMana user guide of the server.

  1. Precautions
    • The serial cable must be securely connected.
    • The serial cable uses a DB9 connector.
  2. Preparation
    • The server and internal components are properly installed.
    • The rack number and installation position of the server to be connected are determined.
  3. Tools
    • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap or ESD gloves: used to prevent ESD damage.

  1. Do not exert excessive force; otherwise, the pins in the serial port may be damaged.

Align the connector on the serial cable with the serial port, and insert the connector into the serial port.

  2. Tighten the two screws on the connector to secure the serial cable. See Figure 4-225.
