Interface Overview

Interface Overview

This section describes the interface types and numbering rules.

Interface Type

Interfaces of a device are used to exchange data and interact with other network devices. Interfaces are classified into management interface, physical interface, and logical interfaces.

  • Management interfaces

Management interfaces are used to log in to devices. Users can use management interfaces to configure and manage devices. Management interfaces do not transmit service data.

  • Physical interfaces

Physical interfaces exist on interface cards and transmit service data.

  • Logical interfaces

Logical interfaces are manually configured and do not physically exist. They can be used to exchange data and transmit service data.

Physical interfaces are sometimes called ports. This document uses the term interface.

Management Interface Numbering Rules

The switch supports console and MEth management interfaces.

The following table lists the numbers of the management interfaces.

Physical Interface Numbering Rules

Physical interfaces are numbered in the following way:

CX11x&CX31x&CX710&CX91x series switch modules switches use the Slot number/Subcard number/Port number to identify physical interfaces.
  • Slot number: indicates the slot number of the current switch module. Its value ranges from 1 to 4, from left to right mapping to slot numbers 1E, 2X, 3X, and 4E.
  • Subcard number: indicates the number of a subcard supported by service ports. The value ranges from 1 to 20.
  • Port number: indicates the sequence number of an interface on the device.

For the examples of the port numbers on switch modules of different modules, see Overview > Ports in CXxxx Switch Module V100R001C10 User Guide.
