CX311 and FCoE Gateway Overview

CX311 and FCoE Gateway Overview

This topic describes the CX311 and fibre channel over Ethernet (FCoE) gateway. A CX311 provides the internal FCoE gateway and fibre channel (FC) ports and supports the FCoE feature and connection to the storage area network (SAN).

If access to the storage network is required for the compute nodes, you can configure the operating mode of the network interface cards (NICs) on compute nodes to the FCoE mode, configure the FCoE feature of the CX311, and set the disk array to allow access of specified NICs. The document describes only the FCoE feature configurations of the CX311. For details about the NIC and disk array configuration, see the corresponding configuration guides.

Perform the following operations to enable access from compute nodes of the to the storage network:
  • Set the NIC operating mode to the FCoE mode.
  • Configure the FCoE feature of the CX311.
  • Set the disk array to allow access of specified NICs.

The document describes only the FCoE feature configurations of the CX311. For details about the NIC and disk array configuration, see the corresponding configuration guides.

The FCoE feature configurations on the CX311 are as follows:
  • Configure data exchanged between the CX311 and the NICs (including the DCBX and FCoE feature configuration). DCBX is short for Data Center Bridging Exchange Protocol.
  • Configure data exchanged between the CX311 switching planes and the FCoE gateway (including the DCBX and FCoE feature configuration).
  • Configure the access control list (ACL) for the ports of the CX311 switching planes and the FCoE gateway to avoid Ethernet traffic burst.
NOTE:

For details about the DCBX feature and configuration, see the Configuring DCBX.
