Configuring Storm Control

Storm control prevents broadcast storms and ensures device forwarding performance.


To limit the rate of incoming broadcast packets, multicast packets, and unknown unicast packets and prevent heavy traffic on a device, configure storm control on an interface.

Pre-configuration Tasks

Before configuring the storm control function, complete the following task:
  • Configuring link layer protocol parameters for interfaces to ensure that the link layer protocol status on the interfaces is Up


  1. Run:


    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run:

    interface interface-type interface-number

    The interface view is displayed.

  3. Run:

    storm control { broadcast | multicast | unicast } max-rate max-rate-value

    Storm control is performed on broadcast packets, multicast packets, or unknown unicast packets on the interface.


    After the storm control unicast max-rate max-rate-value command is executed, the device suppresses the known unicast packets.

  4. Run:

    storm control action error-down

    The command sets the storm control action to shutdown.

  5. (Optional) Run:

    storm control enable { log | trap }

    The function of recording logs or reporting traps during storm control is enabled.

  6. (Optional) Run:

    storm control interval interval-value

    The detection interval is set.

  7. Run:


    The configuration is committed.

Checking the Configuration

Run the display storm control [ interface interface-type interface-number ] command to check the storm control configuration on the interface.
