Software and Hardware Requirements

To establish a stack successfully, confirm the software and hardware requirements beforehand, for example, the device model and cable type used. Table 2-2 describes the software and hardware requirements for establishing a stack.

NOTE:
  • Switches of different models cannot set up a stack. For example, CX710 switch module 40GE converged switching plane and CX110 switch module GE switching plane switches cannot set up a stack.

  • 10GE and 40GE ports cannot be added to the same stack port.

  • On the and CX110 switch module GE switching plane, if a 10GE port with port number in the range 4N+1 to 4N+4 (N = 0, 1, 2, 3...) is configured as physical member port, all the ports with port numbers 4N+1 to 4N+4 are configured as physical member ports. There is no such restriction on other models.

  • Among the four 10GE optical ports of a CX111 and CX915 switch modules, 10GE1/20/1 and 10GE1/20/2 must be added to the same stack port, and 10GE1/20/3 and 10GE1/20/4 must be added to another stack port. There is no such restriction on other models.

High-speed cables, optical modules and fibers can be used to connect stack member switches. Table 2-3 describes the cables applicable to different ports.

The required optical fibers are determined by the optical modules you select.

NOTE:
  • The 40GE optical port is used for device stacking. When two CX110s or two CX91x series switch modules are installed in slots 1E and 4E or slots 2X and 3X in a chassis, the 10GE switching planes on them support two 40GE channels. When two CX31x series switch modules are installed in slots 1E and 4E or slots 2X and 3X in a chassis, the 10GE switching planes on them support one 40GE channel.

  • Do not insert GE optical or electrical modules into 10GE optical ports. Otherwise, the 10GE optical ports cannot be used for device stacking.

  • The maximum single-hop transmission of SFP/SFP+ optical modules is up to 80 km. The maximum single-hop transmission of QSFP optical modules is up to 10 km.
