This section describes the usage scenarios of NTP. The switch module system time is synchronized with the management module by default. That is, the time synchronization mode is set to automatic. Time synchronization with the management module and NTP time synchronization cannot be enabled at the same time. If you enable NTP time synchronization, disable time synchronization with the management module by running undo clock sync-source smm. If you enable synchronization with the management module, disable the NTP time synchronization by running ntp server disable.

Typical Application

On the network as shown in Figure 3-18, Switch ModuleA accessing a standard clock is used as the NTP master clock server to achieve synchronization of clocks on the entire network. Switch ModuleA is configured as the unicast server, and Switch ModuleB, Switch ModuleC and Switch ModuleD are configured as unicast clients. Switch ModuleE acts as a symmetric peer of the upstream Switch ModuleB and downstream Switch ModuleF.

Application in VPN Networking

Figure 3-19 shows application of the NTP service on a VPN network. Both CE A and CE B belong to VPN 2. CE B is used as an NTP unicast server, CE A is used as an NTP unicast client, and NTP time synchronization can be implemented between CE B and CE A.
