Access the BIOS main menu and select 3 to access the Ethernet interface submenu.The following example shows information displayed on a CX91x series switch module 10GE switching plane. Information displayed on your device may be different.

1. Update BIOS

Updates the BIOS through the Ethernet interface.

2. Update system software

Starts the system software through the Ethernet interface.

When no system software exists in the storage medium, you can select this item to download system software from the server and configure the downloaded system software as the startup system software.

3. Update system software with disk format

Formats the storage medium and starts the system software through the Ethernet interface.

When the BIOS version is incompatible with the system software version or the device fails to start after you select Update system software, select this item.

4. Modify parameters

Sets Ethernet interface parameters before downloading or uploading files.

5. Return

Returns to the BIOS main menu.

Update system software

Access the ethernet interface submenu and select 2 to access the menu for updating system software.

Before accessing this submenu, set Ethernet interface parameters. After accessing this submenu, enter the required system software.

After the system software is specified, the device downloads the system software from the server and starts using this system software.

NOTE:

When the device downloads the system software, consecutive asterisks (#) are displayed. If the letter T is displayed, the network is not properly connected. Check the network connectivity and try again.

When the device loads the system software, ensure that the TFTP server program is running.

Update system software with disk format

Access the ethernet interface submenu and select 3 to access the menu for updating system software in disk format mode.

After the storage medium is formatted through the Ethernet interface, all data in the storage medium, including history system software and configuration files, is deleted. Exercise caution when formatting the storage medium.

  • Values of Ethernet interface parameters cannot contain spaces.

    The values must be numerals. To delete the current setting, enter a period (.). To return to the preceding setting, enter a hyphen (-). To cancel the configuration under the Modify ethernet interface parameters menu, press Ctrl+C. The Ethernet interface parameters are as follows:

    • Server IP address: TFTP server IP address.
    • Switch IP address: Ethernet interface IP address.
    • Gateway IP address: Gateway IP address in the network segment of the device.
    • Network Mask: Subnet mask.

    When IP addresses of the device and TFTP server are on different network segment, you must set Gateway IP address. When they are on the same network segment, you do not need to set Gateway IP address.

    NOTE:

    The preceding Ethernet interface parameters (192.168.X.X is a private IP address.) are configured for the factory acceptance test. The output provided here is used for reference only. The actual output information may differ from the preceding information.

  • Run the TFTP server program on the operation terminal or PC and specify the directory where the system software is stored.

    NOTE:

    The TFTP server program is not installed on the device. Customers need to buy the TFTP server program and install it. The TFTPD32 program is recommended.

    Run the TFTP server program on a PC and configure the PC as shown in Figure 1-39.

    • Current Directory: Click Browse and specify the directory for storing files to be uploaded or downloaded.
    • Server interfaces: Enter the TFTP server IP address, which must be on the same network segment as the IP address of the Ethernt port on the device. For example 192.168.1.11. Generally, the system automatically sets this IP address.
