Replacing a Fan Module in the Chassis

This section describes how to replace a fan module in the Capacity node chassis.

Impact on the System

The Capacity node must be powered off before replacement of a fan module. Therefore, the services running on the Capacity node will be affected. Perform this operation with caution.

Prerequisites

  • A new fan module is available.
  • The faulty fan is located.
  • The fan module is in the middle of the main control board enclosure. You need to remove the main control board enclosure first.

Precaution

  • Only professional technical engineers are allowed to replace fans.
  • Each Capacity node has two power supplies. Ensure that both power supplies are disconnected.

Tools and Materials

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Scissors
  • Tie (used to bind cables of the fan)
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear the ESD wrist strap or gloves. For details, see Wearing an ESD Wrist Strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  2. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

    Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

  3. Label the cables on the Capacity node and disconnect the Capacity node from the power sockets and other devices. Execute the shutdown command through the operating system to power off the Capacity node. Disconnect the power socket from other devices.
  4. Move the Capacity node out of the cabinet to an ESD workbench.

    NOTE:
    • When you remove the Capacity node chassis out of the cabinet, take out the disk modules first to reduce the overall weight. For details about how to remove the disk modules, see 2 to 5 in Replacing a Service Disk Module.
    • Place the removed disk modules on an ESD workbench in order and label the disk modules.

    The following is the procedure for removing the Capacity node out of the cabinet:

    1. Loosen the two screws that fix the Capacity node to the cabinet counterclockwise, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-17.
    2. Hold the handles on both sides of the Capacity node and pull out the chassis slowly, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-17.
      NOTE:
      • Ensure that the handles on both sides of the Capacity node are intact before you pull out the chassis.
      • Arrange three persons to carry the Capacity node after it is removed form the cabinet.

  5. Take out the main control board enclosure. For details, see 4 in Replacing a Fan Module in the Main Control Board Enclosure.
  6. Open the chassis cover.

    1. Loosen the six screws that fix chassis counterclockwise, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-18.
    2. Remove the cover forward, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-18.

  7. Remove the fan module.

    NOTE:
    The six fans are divided into three groups. You only need to replace the faulty group.
    1. Loosen the 2 screws that fix the fan module to the chassis counterclockwise, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-19.
    2. Disconnect the cables between the fan module and mainboard in order.
    3. Remove the fan module upward, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-19.

  8. Put the removed fan module in an ESD bag.
  9. Take the fan module to be installed out of the ESD bag.
  10. Install the fan module in the Capacity node chassis.
  11. Connect the cables between the fan module and mainboard in order.
  12. Fasten the screws to fix the fan module.
  13. Install the chassis cover.

    1. Push the cover in position, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-20.
    2. Fasten the six screws clockwise to secure the cover, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-20.

  14. Install the main control board enclosure. For details, see 11 in Replacing a Fan Module in the Main Control Board Enclosure.
  15. Install the Capacity node into the cabinet.

    1. Slide the chassis along the guide rails into the cabinet, as shown in step 1 in Figure 4-21.
    2. Fasten the screws clockwise to fix the Capacity node to the cabinet, as shown in step 2 in Figure 4-21.

    NOTE:

    After you have installed the Capacity node into the cabinet, install the disk modules into the chassis. For details about how to install a disk module, see 6 to 9 in Replacing a Service Disk Module.

  16. According to the labels, connect the Capacity node to the power socket and other devices. Then power on the Capacity node.
  17. Log in to the device management software. Choose Device Management > Device Info and check the fan status.

    • If the status is Normal, the installation is successful.
    • If the status is Fault, the new fan module may be incorrectly installed. Remove and reinstall the fan module.

    NOTE:
    Fan modules 1 to 5 are fans of the main control board enclosure and fan modules 6 to 11 are internal fans of the chassis.

Follow-up Procedure

After replacing the fan, label the removed fan module for subsequent handling.
