Replacing a Network Adapter

Replacing a Network Adapter

This section explains how to replace a network adapter for a Mini-capacity node.

Impact on the System

You must power off the Mini-capacity node before replacing a network adapter. This interrupts the services running on the Mini-capacity node. Exercise caution when performing this operation.

Prerequisites

  • The replacement network adapter is ready.
  • The network adapter is located at the rear of the enclosure. You need to remove the rear cover of the enclosure before replacing the network adapter.

Precaution

  • Only qualified technical support engineers are allowed to replace a network adapter.
  • Ensure that both power supplies of the Mini-capacity node have been shut down.

Tools and Materials

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear the ESD wrist strap and ESD gloves. For details, see Put on an ESD wrist strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  2. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

  3. Label the cable connections between the Mini-capacity node and power sockets and peripheral devices. Then disconnect the cables.
  4. Take out the main control board enclosure and open the cover. For details, see 4 to 5 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  5. Loosen the screw that fixes the network adapter counterclockwise, as shown in step 1 in Figure 2-56.

Figure 2-56  Removing a network adapter from a Mini-capacity node

  6. Remove the network adapter, as shown in step 2 in Figure 2-56.
  7. Put the removed network adapter into an ESD bag.
  8. Take the replacement network adapter out of its ESD bag.
  9. Insert the network adapter into the PCIe slot, as shown in step 1 in Figure 2-57.

Figure 2-57  Installing a network adapter for a Mini-capacity node

  10. Fasten the screw clockwise to fix the network adapter in the PCIe slot, as shown in step 2 in Figure 2-57.
  11. Install the cover of the main control board enclosure. For details, see 10 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  12. Install the main control board enclosure. For details, see 11 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  13. Correctly connect the Mini-capacity node to the power sockets and peripheral devices according to the cable connection labels. Then power on the Mini-capacity node.
  14. Check whether the network adapter is successfully installed by observing the status of the ACT indicators on the network adapter.

    • If the ACT indicator is steady or blinking green, the network adapter is successfully installed.
    • If the ACT indicator is off, the network adapter may be incorrectly installed. In this case, reinstall the network adapter.

  15. Optional: Check and upgrade the firmware of an IB network adapter.

After replacing an IB network adapter, perform the following operations:

    1. On the node where the IB network adapter to be replaced resides, run the ibstat command to check whether the value of Firmware version is 2.33.5310.

      • If yes, there is no need to upgrade firmware.
      • If no, go to 15.b.

    2. Upgrade the firmware.

      1. Log in to http://support.huawei.com/enterprise/en/doc/DOC1000150997 and download the OceanStor 9000 Node Firmware Upgrade Guide.zip package. Decompress the package to obtain the OceanStor 9000 IB Card Firmware Upgrade Guide.
      2. Log in to http://support.huawei.com/enterprise/en/software/22318311-SW1000242794 and download the OceanStor_9000_V300R006C00SPC200_FW_T3000.zip package. Decompress the package to obtain the IB network adapter firmware upgrade file.

On the output of the ibstat command:

        • If the value of Part Number ends with QCBT, obtain the fw-ConnectX3-rel-2_30_8310-MCX354A-QCB_Ax-FlexBoot-3.4.151.bin file in the ib_fw\40g directory.
        • If the value of Part Number ends with FCBT, obtain the fw-ConnectX3-rel-2_33_5310-MCX354A-FCB_A2-A5-FlexBoot-3.4.460.bin file in the ib_fw\56g directory.

  16. Check whether the network ports of the storage node are named A0-0, A0-1, B3-0, and B3-1.
    1. Run ifconfig -a on the KVM to check whether the network ports of the storage node are named A0-0, A0-1, B3-0, and B3-1.

      • If yes, the replacement is completed.
      • If no, go to 16.b.

    2. Run reboot to restart the storage node to identify the new network adapter.
  17. Check the status of the storage node on the DeviceManager.
    1. Start the browser on the maintenance terminal and log in to the DeviceManager.
    2. In the Alarms area on the home page, check whether a new alarm is reported.

      • If yes, handle the alarm according to the alarm help.
      • If no, go to 17.c.

    3. On the right of the home page, click System to go to the System page.
    4. Click Device View tab to go to the Device View page.
    5. In Nodes, check the status of the node that is newly added to the cluster.

      • Health Status: Normal
      • Running Status: Online

Follow-up Procedure

After the network adapter is replaced, label the replaced network adapter to facilitate subsequent operations.
