Replacing a Service Disk Midplane

This section explains how to replace the service disk midplane (referred to as the midplane) for the Performance node.

Impact on the System

Before you replace the midplane, you need to power off the Performance node. Therefore, the running services on the Performance node will be interrupted.

Prerequisites

The midplane to be replaced is ready.

Precaution

  • Only professional maintenance personnel are allowed to replace a midplane.
  • The Performance node has two power supplies. Ensure that both supplies are disconnected.
  • To prevent personal injury, arrange two persons to replace it.

Tools and Materials

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • ESD gloves
  • ESD wrist strap
  • ESD bag
  • Labels

Procedure

  1. Wear the ESD wrist strap and gloves. For details, see Wearing an ESD Wrist Strap in Replacing a Main Control Board Enclosure.
  2. Take out the disk enclosure.
    1. Use KVM to log in to the OS as user root (default password is Root@storage), then run poweroff to poweroff the node and wait for the shutdown to complete.

      Wait for the KVM screen to have no output, indicates that the shutdown has been completed.

    2. Label the cables on the Performance node and disconnect it from the power socket and other devices.
    3. Move the Performance node out of the cabinet to an ESD workbench.

      NOTE:
      • When you remove the Performance node chassis out of the cabinet, take out the disk modules first to reduce the overall weight. For details about how to remove the disk modules, see 2 to 5 in Replacing a Service Disk Module.
      • Place the removed disk modules on an ESD workbench in order and label the disk modules.

      The following is the procedure for removing the Performance node out of the cabinet:

      1. Loosen the two screws that fix the Performance node to the cabinet counterclockwise, as shown in step 1 in Figure 3-16.
      2. Hold the handles on both sides of the Performance node and pull out the chassis slowly, as shown in step 2 in Figure 3-16.
        NOTE:
        • Ensure that the handles on both sides of the Performance node are intact before you pull out the chassis.
        • Arrange two persons to carry the Performance node after it is removed form the cabinet.

    4. Take out the main control board enclosure. For details, see 4 in Replacing a Fan Module.
    5. Take out the two power modules. For details, see 2 in Replacing a Power Module.
    6. Remove the disk modules. For details, see 2 to 5 in Replacing a Service Disk Module.
    7. As shown in step 1 in Figure 3-17, loosen the 5 screws on the disk enclosure counterclockwise and put the removed screws in an ESD bag.
    8. As shown in step 2 in Figure 3-17, pull out the disk enclosure and put it on the workbench.

  3. Remove the midplane.

    1. As shown in step 1 in Figure 3-18, disconnect the mounting ear cables from the midplane.
    2. As shown in step 2 in Figure 3-18, remove the 11 screws fixing the midplane.
    3. As shown in step 3 in Figure 3-18, hold the power connectors on two sides of the midplane and remove the midplane.
    4. Put the removed midplane into an ESD bag. The operation of removing the midplane is complete.

  4. Install the replacement midplane.

    1. Take the midplane to be installed out of the ESD bag.
    2. As shown in step 1 in Figure 3-19, put the midplane horizontally on the service disk enclosure along the two positioning pins
    3. As shown in step 2 in Figure 3-19, secure the 11 screws fixing the midplane.
    4. As shown in step 3 in Figure 3-19, carefully connect the mounting ear cables to the connector on the midplane, and secure the mounting ear using the plastic parts.

  5. Install the service disk enclosure.
    1. As shown in step 1 in Figure 3-20, gently push the disk enclosure into the Performance node enclosure until it snaps into place.
    2. s shown in step 2 in Figure 3-20, fasten the 5 screws on the disk enclosure clockwise.

  6. Install the main control board enclosure. For details, see 11 in Replacing a Fan Module.
  7. Install the power supply. For details, see 4 in Replacing a Power Module.
  8. Install disks. For details, see 7 in Replacing a Service Disk Module.
  9. Install the Performance node into the cabinet.

    1. Slide the chassis along the guide rails into the cabinet, as shown in step 1 in Figure 3-21.
    2. Fasten the screws clockwise to fix the Performance node to the cabinet, as shown in step 2 in Figure 3-21.

  10. Connect the Performance node with the power supply and other devices. Ensure that the cables are connected properly, and then power on the device.
  11. Check whether the midplane has been replaced successfully.

    • If the disk is powered on correctly and the disk indicator is steady on, the midplane has been replaced successfully.
    • If the disk indicator is off, the midplane has failed to be replaced. Reinstall it or contact the technical support engineers of your vendor.

Follow-up Procedure

After the midplane is replaced, label the replaced midplane for the convenience of subsequent handling.
