This section describes the background, definition, purposes and benefits of LUN copy.


As digital systems are commonly used in a variety of industries, to prevent data loss, it is necessary to migrate data during device upgrade or data backup. In traditional data migration process, data is transmitted from a storage system to an application server, and then from the application server to another storage system. This migration process takes a long time and consumes network resources and system resources of application servers. How to accelerate data migration becomes a question that urgently needs an answer.

LUN copy technology comes to play. It can migrate data between storage systems or within a storage system, and can also migrate multiple data between multiple storage systems. Multiple copies of source data can be generated to meet other needs such as data distribution and centralized backup.


LUN copy is a data replication technology that quickly transmits data within a storage system or between storage systems. LUN copy copies all the data of a source LUN and requires service suspension.

The following LUN copy methods are available:
  • Copy a LUN within a device for fast data backup.
  • Copy LUNs between two devices for data backup against the complete failure of either device.

    You can create an inter-device LUN copy for Huawei storage devices or Huawei-certified third-party storage devices.

  • Create multiple copies of a source LUN to generate multiple data backups for enhanced data security.

LUN copy is only supported for LUNs (block services).

Simultaneous replication of LUNs from multiple storage systems

Users can create multiple LUNs in storage systems and simultaneously copy data to the LUNs.

Data replication between a Huawei storage system and a third-party storage system

LUN copy supports data replication not only between OceanStor storage systems but also between an OceanStor storage system and a Huawei-certified third-party storage system.

Dynamic replication rate adjustment

To mitigate the impact, users can lower the replication rate when service load is heavy. When the service load becomes light, users can raise the replication rate.
