This section analyzes the requirement of an enterprise on using LUN copy to migrate data and draws a conclusion from the analysis.

  • Enterprise service introduction

    An enterprise's data management service runs on an application server on weekdays only. A set of storage system (device A) provides storage space for the service, and a maintenance terminal is used to manage the storage system. The application server is connected to two Fibre Channel switches. Figure 2-1 shows the network diagram.

  • Service Requirements

    The enterprise is developing rapidly, along which the service data amount also increases notably. The device A falls short to meet the performance requirement. Therefore, the customer wants to buy a new storage system (device B) of the same version as device A, and migrates the existing data from the device A to the device B. Specific requirements are as follows:
    • Data will be migrated from the device A to the device B.
    • After the migration is completed, the device B replaces the device A as the storage system.

Requirement Analysis and Conclusion

  • Feature selection analysis

    According to the requirements, what the customer needs is a data replication solution. Huawei storage systems can provide three value-added data replication features: clone, remote replication, and LUN copy. Table 2-2 describes the replication method and application scenarios of each feature.

    Conclusion 1: As the customer needs to migrate data between the device A and device B, it can be concluded from the previous table that LUN copy is a feasible solution.

    Because the customer requires replacing the device A with the device B, the live network can be retained.

    Conclusion 2: To use the device B to take over the host service, deploy the device B without changing the live network, complete the data migration, and map the target LUN from the device B to the host through the LUN group.
